Would you go to Mexico without a US passport?

i have a passport already , so of course, i will always take it with me when i leave the country

i need to get my wife's renewed

when my eldest kid turns 16 i'll get hers renewed and get one for the little kid when she turns 10 or 11

I don't have my passport with me (it's at home) and I'm trying to decide if it's a good idea to go without it.

I can't seem to find any other form of identification (I have my driver licence) that the customs and border protection department accepts.

I've been down there with just my DL...no problems.

However, if you get pulled over by cops, be prepared to pay them in cash for your "ticket" or else they will drag you to the station and you'll get even more royally ****** there.

i'm going to rosarito beach.... is that a bad neighborhood or is it just bad in general

I've been to border towns with only my DL. They didn't even check it on the way back in to the US. I guess being the whitest white boy helps.

Been there, done that. That was pre-911 though and I used a US military ID card at the border.

Yes. I typically don't travel with my passport after I clear customs in a new country anyway. Haven't had a problem yet.

You may have to have to apply for a new passport for your oldest child. My older brother just went to get his passport again, but his first one was before he turned 16, so he needed to apply for a new one.

Passport renewal rules from the State Dept.

1. Already have a passport that is not damaged; and
2. Received it within the past 15 years; and
3. Were at least age 16 when it was issued; and
4. Still have the same name as in passport (or you can legally document your name change).

If you speak perfect English, I wouldn't worry about it.
I'm assuming you are crossing from San Diego.
I'm Asian and I've entered Mexico from SD at least 15 times.

Done it plenty of times before 9/11. I have driven across, walked across and flown across. Since 9/11 I have always brought my passport.

Flying was the only time I carried my passport. I have driven 8 hours into Mexico before without a problem. It is pretty obvious if you aren't a citizen when you try to reenter the US. They asked you random questions like what sports teams are in a city and who was the last president.

Mexico isn't that bad if you aren't stupid.

Rosarito is a lot of fun unless you are there in an off-month. The locals don't like young American kids running around being stupid. Be respectful.

To be honest I felt more safe in Mexico than I did in Spain. In fact, I have never been physically confronted in Mexico but was a few times in Spain, esp. by Barcelona's local Arab population.

I'm just happy that I live in the USA, where I know that all cops are honest and have integrity beyond reproach. And of course the same goes for any politician, whether they are in office or not, and whether they've stepped down from their position or have been removed for reasons that are not entirely clear.
