I95 rest stop in MD between baltimore and DC.

I just lost $5000 at the casino and headed back home. only had $20 left to my name.
it's a little after sunset.

I stopped at the rest stop to take a piss. there were plenty of cars there.
as I was almost back to my car, some guy asked me for some gas $.

he said he was from going from PA to NC w/his son. (points to kid that's inside an expensive looking SUV. the kid was looking at us.)
he couldn't find his wallet and needs gas $ to go back to PA. he said he'll mail me back the $.

I gave him the $20 and said don't worry about it.

I did it because:
1) I believed him. normally, people who drive expensive cars don't beg for $ (unless he was lying about the SUV).
2) I rather have $0 in my wallet than $20 after losing $5k. I rather come home completely empty.

so basically, he was at the right place at the right time and asked the right person.

Would you have given him gas $?

edit:
in my rear view mirror as I was driving away, I did see him enter that SUV.

No. Usually the following is what happens:

1. They go station to station, trying to get some $ to buy drugs/alcohol. I would be OK with this if they just said "I need some money for cheap vodka." instead of "I need money for gas" Some say this with brand new f250s lol
2. They want to see how much $ is in your wallet to decide if its enough to rob you

Occasionally, the beggar is in need of $ because they are drifters and need it to survive.

Don't let a nice car or outfit fool you, you would be surprised what dirtbags accumulate.

$20 probably won't get the behemoth to the next exit anyway...

Call me a cynic but I'm sure he already had a full tank. Now he just has $20 on top of it. Begging for gas money guarantees a nice payout if you trick the right sucker like the OP. Begging on the streets will only get you chump change. 😛

No, I've gotten the same pitch twice at the local Sunoco, " I just need $5 to get home"..well, if you didn't have any gas $ why would you leave home in the first place?, if I had no $$ and enough gas to go 100 miles I would go no more than 40-50 before heading back. OP, the SUV he pointed to probably wasn't even his vehicle or kid either. As for casinos, it's possible to win but not on a consistent basis, look at the casinos in Vegas, Foxwoods, Atlantic city, huge expensive establishments all paid for with gambling profits. My sole gambling is $5/week on the lotto and I usually do so bad I don't even know why I do that.

2 out of the last 3 times I went to buy gas there was a beggar there with a sign. He was standing right between the pumps, he would pretty much walk up and stick the sign in peoples faces. It said homeless, deaf etc etc.

oh.. didn't think of being robbed. but then again, if I won $ or even broke even, I wouldn't have given him $ anyway.
hm.. kinda twisted logic. I lost $ so might as well give the last $20 away but if I won, I wouldn't have given him a dime.

and how would a lowlife get a nice car? stole it?

it was his. I saw him enter it, start it, and pull out of the parking space in my rear view mirror, as I was driving away

I had a woman ask me that a rest area saying her car broke down blah blah blah, offered her a ride she refused and only wanted cash. She didn't get shit.

I'm not paranoid enough not to help out others. I'm more than willing to take somebody to the shop, home, etc to help them out. But I'll be damned if I just straight up give somebody cash.

In this situation I would've told the guy I could help him make it to the nearest bank/store so he could get some cash (wired), but I wouldn't have gave him mine.

I would pay $20 of gas and put the gas into his SUV, no cash for him. Plus I rarely have any cash on me, cash back credit cards for me most of the time (except cash only places such as laundry, car wash, etc.).

Oh, OK, kinda goofy to start a road trip and forget your wallet, I've done it a couple of times going to the grocery store but never on a trip. You'd be surprised how many people drive vehicles they cannot afford, dealerships will "shop" those around to anyone willing to finance a sale. When gas got over $4/gal I started seeing Navigators an Suburbans going around town with the windows down trying to eek as much gas mileage out of their shrimp-boats by not running the AC, not running the AC in FL, in August, makes for miserable driving, specially around town.

that's a good idea. bit of a hassle though. maybe could just say that to see his reaction. if he's like great thanks then it's probably legit and i'd just give him the money.

That guy hit me up for gas money on my way to NC a few years ago. I was not a sucker.

But this thread is just some kind of screwed up humblebrag about losing $5000 gambling like it's no big thing. You're triply stupid - losing the money, getting suckered, and humblebragging about it.

A couple times I've given money, more often than not I don't. The less "good" a person is at begging the more likely I give them some cash.

I probably would at a rest area. Shit happens when you travel sometimes. If it was daytime with others around, I'd might ask to see how much gas he had left, first. At night, I'd just go off whether I believed them.

I've had dickheads at gas stations come up to me and ask me for money for gas. They get nothing. One asshole didn't even have a car.

Got the same sob story at gas stations couple times. They're not getting squat from me. It's a rather a good scheme to play that odd of getting a handout, must be pretty profitable. Heard it all, lost my wallet, purse stolen, credit card not working, need to get home, got 2 kids... Admittedly I fell for it first time but pissed me off when I get the same story again. Fool me once...

Wait... you gave a guy $20 at a rest stop and didn't even get a hand job in return? Some negotiator you are.
