The last time I had this scam pulled on me, it was a woman in her early 20s asking for gas money to visit her ailing grandfather. I'm not one to pay for such services, but I was seriously tempted to ask her just to see what her reaction might be. In the end I stopped myself, mostly on the grounds that it seemed like the perfect police sting.

Hard to judge, really depends on the circumstances and what my gut feeling is. 20 bucks is kind of a lot of money to give to a random stranger and is not going to get them very far in terms of gas, but at very least it should be enough so they can at least go home, then from there they can figure out their situation.

huge difference between a highway reststop and your neighborhood gas station.

the reststop is in the middle of nowhere. the only thing there is a restroom.

I've been using this rest stop for over a decade. this is the 1st time ive seen anyone beg for $.

yes, this could be the start of a new trend, especially since the neighborhood gas stations where some of u live are full of competition from other beggers.

I saw a dude one day pull a black Acura off behind some bushes, IDK the exact make/model year but it was a nice one, then he headed off to a busy intersection with the typical "help me, mt baby is hungry" sign and stood there at the left arrow, (there is a wide concrete medium there, perfect for begging since it takes forever for the lights to cycle.

Got a similar request outside a gas station/food court in CT on rte 95. Frantic guy had a story about losing his wallet/car full of kids and needed $50 for repairs. I offered to talk to the mechanic about what was needed and the guy took off. Sorry, but I think you got burned.

I stopped at the rest stop to take a piss. there were plenty of cars there. as I was almost back to my car, some guy asked me for some gas $.

Always happens as you are leaving because the grifter wants to maximize throughput. Ask sucker for money, get the money/don't get the money, sucker leaves, move on to next sucker. With kid involved he probably makes pretty reasonable tax free money.

If you really feel compelled to help these human vermin at least ask to see the fuel gauge in their car before giving any money. While certainly not a perfect indicator at least you will trip up the stupid ones.

Hell no, but Austin has made me very jaded against beggars.

In three months I've heard every sob story, seen every tactic from crying babies to sick dogs, and have been approached at every conceivable venue.

There are full time beggars out here, and they are doing very well. I had a young kid straight up stop me on the sidewalk and ask for cash, no sob story, just said "hey man, spare some money?". The kid was wearing a polo, jeans and decent kicks so he obviously wasn't that bad off. For a split second I was wondering if the kid was going to try and mug me, but were were out in the open and it was light out, I told him sorry I don't; he walked off without making a fuss. I have to hand it to him, if you want to maximize your $/hr I guess cutting the bull and just bluntly asking someone for money is likely the best way to do it.

Back to the guy at the rest stop. If someone is out of cash they should be asking for help from friend's/family, and if they won't help them then there is likely a good reason so I'm not going to help them either. WTF are they doing with a nice SUV in the middle of nowhere without any money in their account or a phone to call someone?
