Would you get the Logitech Z-680 for watching DVDs on your big-TV screen or other speakers? *UPDATE*

My budget is limited so, would you think it's a good idea to get the Logitech Z-680 for watching DVDs on the TV?

No way. It is definitely worth the money to find one of those home theatre in a box sets for $400-$600. Yamaha makes good stuff for this. You can usually find these used from people who have upgraded as well.

ditto, logitech/klipsch are for PC use only...they're big, but they're shrimp compared to a good HT setup.

But keep in mind that I only have about $400 for some nice speakers.

I got an Onkyo home theater in a box from Circuit City for $499 and I love it.

Did come with a receiver, so if youre just looking for speakers, it should fall into your $400 range.

ok, I took a look at the for example Yamaha NS-P 220, and they all have much less wattage. And I only read good things over the Z-680. What's the difference between specific-for-PC-built Speakers and REAL home theater speakers?

Firstly, the z680s are NOT 450W RMS in any traditionally recognised sense of the word. The amplifier would need to be at least 5 times the size and 10 times the weight to put out that much power (My 200Wpc power amp weighs more than the whole z680 system.)

High end PC speakers are in a similar league to many HTIB setups as far as sound goes. The difference with regard to real home cinema (companies such as B&W, KEF, Eltax, Mission etc...) is simply that real home cinema goes louder and sounds better at all volumes. For a mid range setup the z680s would be ok and give you convincing surround sound in a medium sized room. They are also probably better than a cheap HTIB setup since that has to lower speaker quality to include a DVD player in the package.

Thanks.

Have you ever heard the Sony SA-VE535H? The satellites suppose to have 120W each and the sub-woofer 150W.

Our three-year old Kenwood HTIB is great. 500 watts. The only problem is that it doesn't include a powered sub. It's unpowered :(

As stated above, the Onkyo HT-S650 is sweet.

Buy it from here: http://www.soundcity.com/product.php?id1=HOME%20AUDIO&product_id=277. Be patient and keep checking back daily. They have a 13% off sale that comes very often, making the set $434 shipped.

Check out your local Circuit City and listen to this set up. It's pretty awesome. Speakers are rather large. Powered sub is nice and loud. The sound will fill a big room easily. You get a real receiver, so upgrades are easy. This is the set I've been drooling over for a while.

The sony set you mentioned is apparently quite tinny and harsh sounding with no real midrange (even compared to other sub-sat systems.)

The onkyo looks considerably better - the sats look more substantial and have bigger drivers. For the price, it looks more promising than either the logitech or the sony system.

Generally, you can ignore power ratings (RMS or otherwise.) Especially with HTIB and PC speakers, manufacturers inflate the ratings massively to try and sound good. For most speakers, the weight is almost a better indicator of power than the power rating.

If you can't get the Onkyo HT-S650's, can you get the Kenwood HTB-505's? I got a set a month ago, & love them. For the price (under $400) they're very hard to beat, & recommendations seem to be split between the Onkyo & the Kenwood. The Onkyo is better, but it is also more expensive.

ndee, i'm not sure if this applies to you, since you are out of the U.S., but: Kenwood HTB-505 @ Best Buy. It's $399 - $100MIR = $299.

never listened to them before, but that's a nice price :)

That's too bad.

I just discovered there is a $100 BB rebate for the HTB-505's as well, maybe I can return mine & then purchase them again so I can send it in.

:D

At $399 I was quite happy, at $299 it's an even better deal.
