<< Nemesis77 Do you know the name Lauri Torni?

He was a great Finn. And a great American also.
>>

Lauri Törni? Of course! Member of the Special Forces during the war against Soviet Union (after the Winter War he fought for SS for a while, but came back to Finland when the second war against sovets began), winner of just about every possible finnish medal, including the Mannerheim Cross (equivalent of Congressional Medal of Honor, highest award in USA I believe) and reached the rank of captain. Was imprisoned by communists after the war, broke out of the jail twice. Being afraid of Soviet harassment, he changed his name to Larry Thorne and moved to USA.

Joined US Army as a private. Later joined the Green Berets. reached the rank of captain. Recovered secret equipment from crashed american spy-plane deep in the Iran-USSR-Turkey border. In 1963 he went to Vietnam, where the unit he led operated in the Tinh Bien area commanding the Special Forces camp A-734. He was so succesfull that the VC/NVA placed a bounty on his head.

On his second tour of duty in Vietnam the helicopter he was travelling in crashed behind enemy lines. His body was not recovered.

John Waynes character in "The Green Berets" is based on Larry Thorne.

That man is a legend! One of the greates soldiers who ever lived!

I agree. Yes he is a legend and one of the greatest soldiers. A very remarkable man.

Not many Americans know of him. This is sad. I'll tell you why in one moment.

When I first went into the Army in 1980, one of my instructors had worked with "Larry Thorne" in 1964. No other man had ever fought communists as hard as Larry Thorne. He was also with a specialized unit of the Waffen SS which fought the Russians for 7 days after the Germans surrendered.

Larry Thorne began fighting oppression as a Finn. But gave his life fighting oppression as an American.

not right now.
i don't think it's becoming a situation in which they really require every man to fight.
we should have enough military personels to finish this simple task.

Absolutely. I joined the Armed Forces to do my part. If that involves catching a bullet, then so be it. I just hope I get a shot off first.

Umm, aren't you the one that is thinking about joing the army or marines and posted a question asking which one you should join?

Well, if you're not willing to die for your country, then the answer is a definite NEITHER!!!

Nope. Not a chance. I would die for my family, my religion, my friends, and possibly even for total strangers who are, themselves, helpless against a greater evil. But the US government is corrupt and not worth the honor of my life. That said, rest assured that I do find the recent destruction of the WTC deplorable, because it was a crime perpetrated against non-combatants.

Not saying that is wrong, but why would you die for a selfish country

And what country is 'self-less'?

BTW, I really wish Canada would join the US. They are almost part of our country any way. "The State of Canada."

I agree!

Actually, if you read the other thread, he thinks joining the military is like joining a summer camp... fun fun fun!

Yes, I would without a doubt if I thought the cause was just, which I think a war on terrorism is.

Then I'd come back and shoot all those p*ssys who ran to Canada!

I guess, but when a "war" like this is being fabricated out of thin air, just to support the man in the chair's money and foreign interests, no.
