Would you consider this deceptive advertising?

Your data is also backed up nightly to an automated tape library solution that can handle over 5 terabytes of data.

before i get into this, yes i know, what do i expect from a company with half price in it's name.

anyways, so i deleted some emails accidentally, and in their FAQ, it said i can get them restored. so i call last night, tech doesn't know what i'm talking about, tells me to call today. i call today, they don't know what i'm talking about, i have to show them where on their site it says it's possible, and then they tell me to talk to billing to get charged the fee.

i talk to billing, and i ask how long it will take, so billing puts me on hold to ask tech. billing comes back and says it is actually not possible.

i call back, after reading more about their servers on that page, and ask "what about the tape backups?" they say, well, everything except email is backed up.

i'm not too familiar with industry standards, but i know that where i work, email IS backed up, and that email IS considered "my data". so when they say that "my data" is backed up nightly, but they neglect to mention that email is NOT backed up, isnt' that just a little bit deceptive?

i have a feeling that the techs are just lazy and/or don't know how to do it.... but they refuse to transfer me to the admin of the servers... they claim the admins told them it's not possible.

sorry gopunk

i'd say emails aren't backed up. and even if it is, they should delete any emails that you delete. think about it a sec, if they backed up everyones email including all that spam the number would just get ridiculous. if i think of how often i have to delete everything in my hotmail account to stay under 2 mb.

anyway, that's just me. i could be wrong. i'm not commenting on the deceptiveness of the ad. i'm not sure on that. i'm just commenting on what would be feasible to back up.

I would think email should be included, they say my data and your email is techincally and realistically part of your important data.

that said i would change your outlook settings to keep the email on the server for 2 or 3 days before deleteing.

well... yea i agree, but the logic i was using is that if i delete something, it should at least still be on the tape that was made a day earlier (i'm pretty sure most places just make the tapes, and archive them... they don't make any changes to the tapes after that).

but that's only if they do back the email up to tape. maybe i'm getting spoiled by the UW and our clearly superior computing services :D

ya, have you ever backed up your outlook express emails? i easily can have a 70 MB file just with my emails. that's having deleted all the spams and everything. if you consider backing up EVERYTHING you receive and EVERYTHING you've sent over a 3 month period for example how much would you say that would come out to? and mb your not a big emailer but there are many people that are, like me for eg. anyway, it would if nothing else eat up all the alloted space you have for your website.

that's just my perspective. i could very well be wrong on this one. :)

eh, i send and receive anywhere from 10 to 30 emails a day (which translates to 20 to 60, since message are kept in sent-mail). i don't delete any of my emails, and yet the university still finds a way to back them up. i have a 500 mb limit on my email account :)

that's just my perspective. i could very well be wrong on this one :)

i don't think you're wrong, we're just talking about different things. maybe if this was hotmail, they have an excuse not to back up. but this is a paid hosting service, which explicitly states my data is backed up.

"your data" is in reference to the data on your web page. I believe it is an unreasonable request to back up all your email.
