Hey guys whats so bad about New Jersay? 😛

Come to Boston! Which areas are you looking to stay?

Honestly? I'd probably get an apartment in Brookline, Brighton, or Cambridge.

Well if you actually want to make money you'd live in Brighton. Plenty of good bars out there, but if you work anywhere else in the city it would be a pain to commute on the T. Didn't you ask this before? Just go, and then in a year start a thread about how you're broke

I don't find the T that bad. Maybe if you're in the other side of the city yeah.

There initial offer was VERY good (20% raise, moving expenses, stock option, benefits from day 1), but when you tried to negotiate higher, they said no?

heck yeah.

20% is more than you make now and they're paying for you to move, why not?
as long as the pay is enough for me to afford to live there.

Tried that. Moved from the burbs of Birmingham, AL to Atlanta. Moved back 2 months later. High crime, high traffic, etc. I'm just not cut out for city living.

This would be moving from Central New Jersey to Boston.

Then absolutely not. I really don't ever want to live in a big city like that.

Is the new job in Boston or outskirts of Boston? If in Boston, cost of living will be much higher and it wont really end up being a 20% income increase.

Hmm, sounds like a win. So, you tried to get them to up the offer and they said no. Unless you have another job for sure that is going to do better I don't see why you would balk.

Depends on what that 20% actually meant in real cash difference.

Going from $25k to $30k isn't a ton of extra money in your pocket a month.

Going from $45k to $54k is getting into decent increase in extra money a month.

Going from $100k to 120k is really starting to add some extra money in your pocket a month.

Just how much further does that 20% take you?

since its a startup company, do you know if they plan to do an IPO in the near future?

if so, it'll be worthwhile, especially if they offered you a hefty amount of stock options.

your life in new jersey is lackluster at best. Opt for the new life. Boston can only be a move up from where youa re now.

No, don't think so.

Look at the worst-case scenario: you move to Boston, absolutely hate it, and decide to move back to Jersey. What will the repercussions be? Will you be able to go back to your previous job? Will your friendships and family relationships have suffered? Basically, what do you have to lose? (not a rhetorical question.) I would assess those things first before weighing any monetary/professional gains if you haven't done so already.
