Would you complain about this?

My son has a pic of him from his school as his profile pic on facebook. One of the teachers told the principle and she called my wife complaining and saying he is getting iss next time it happens because apparently they can not post pics taken at school on their pages. My son tells me on on this teacher's personal page she has pics from school of a bunch of kids, mine included. What would you do in this situation?

Ask them to give in writing, that way you can have a lawsuit. Seriously, these teachers are becoming the scum of the society. I hope unions are illegalized soon.

If you have time, then fight, take it to the principal, if not, just comply and let it go... I would let it go, I done so couple of times in the past...

At my son's school the teacher has a favorite, a girl she knows and socializes with, goes to same church and so on, she is the best student in the class. Whenever my son does better than her, she will come up with some ridiculous complaint.

As long as the pics are not copyrighted, then feel free to post them.

Yep.

"Please put that in writing. I'll need a copy for my lawyer as well."

Should be the end of it.

I'd ask for the policy in writing and then you'll gladly comply.

You think school policies, as stupid as they may be, are set by copyright?

I'd bitch out the school for sure because that is lame as hell if they don't even follow it themselves and the complaining teacher breaks the rule herself!

It's bullshit. But:

Teacher's personal page on the school's website or personal page on Facebook? Because legally those are completely different.

Edit: Also, teachers and administrators get very, very nervous when they find a picture of a student with the name attached. (Like your son's FB account, I'd assume.) Scared people do stupid things. Maybe this is an opportunity to talk with your son about stalkers, pedos, internet security, privacy, etc. May be a case of wrong-reaction-for-the-right-reasons.

Enroll you in school with your son.

Teacher's fb page
That's almost certainly - "almost," since policies can vary - a big no-no.

I used to work for a school district where the official line from the teacher's union was basically "Use at your own risk, we'd prefer you not have them at all. Never friend students, keep everything private, and if anybody complains you're on your own."

Proceed with caution as the teacher can make your son's life miserable for the rest of the year.

I wonder if she's trying to say that pictures taken by the school's photographer are copyrighted. The ones she posts are her own.

The picture was taken with his phone

How big of a deal do you want to make of this?

If it were me I would do just what I said earlier: ask for a written copy of the policy including a copy for my lawyer. Chances are they will go looking for the policy and find out there isn't one. If they insist on him removing the pic before they give you the policy, its time for a sit down.

Is your son flipping off the camera or something that could be considered inappropriate?

Conflicts with "authorities" over nothing issues like this are always hard to weigh. The path of least resistance would be just to comply without a fight, but fighting and winning feels to damned good not to try. :D

Some whiny parent probably objected to having their kid's picture posted on social media and threatened to sue. So the school did what any brain dead bureaucrat would do. Ban it across the board. Make sure you get it in writing to clear up any confusion.

Next step is to lock down your son's social media account so only his friends can see his pictures and post. Make sure he un-friends any teachers or other school officials as well. What he posts on his Facebook page is none of the school's business.

I don't agree with the policy, but that is a brain-dead statement. If teachers are becoming the scum of society, then its scum all the way down.

Teachers don't set school policy. If you wanted to argue that school administrators and boards have been and always will be the scum of society, I might agree with you.
