I am looking at 87 wagon with 190K for $700, seller claims its in good mechanical shape. Desperately need a cheap second car, Have very little money to spend.

maybe, I got a 1988 honda civic with 180k miles on it for 700 and i then drove it for 40k miles before i parked it, got 42mpg on highway too

your call, frames often go first.

If it sounds good, runs good, and drives good, yes.. it is a good deal for 700$.

got a 91 honda civic not too long ago with 124,000 km on it.

so far: oil/transmission/coolant/brake/steering fluid maintenance plus,

new exhaust (cat, muffler & all pipes)
new brakes
3 new wheel bearings
2 new driveaxles (one is turning out to be defective and is being replaced again tomorrow)
4 new tires
1 new rim
stereo upgrade
new wires, cap, rotor & plugs
new battery
new timing & accessory belts
new headlights
new taillights

from september --> now i've put 25,000 km on it.

if you want a cheap backup car, that wagon would be awesome, cause they can hold quite abit for their size, and are generally awd 🙂

Really, the only thing that kills those old Hondas is rust. I'd still be driving my old Accord if the floorpan hadn'e started to develop holes. If the car runs and drives well, then it will likely serve you well.

If you live in Southern California, or Florida.... there are older model cars Everywhere, in perfect condition! I think the rust problem is from salt/snow.

Ever heard of the Ocean that chills right by Florida? You know the GOM? It causes pretty bad rust damage too. There are other areas of the country that rarely get snow other than Florida or So. Cal.

That is a waste of money, time and everything else you can possibly waste. Sorry for this comment. But I feel buying a used foreign car that is so damn old is a waste of every penny. My friend who has 91 accord tells me it's very reliable. Except for the fact that, he replaced the transmission, it is carburated and don't start 90% of the time without starter fluid, he spent more money on repairs that the car's value x10 to the 25th power. It looks and drives like crap and he stills takes it to the dealer for an oil change. I feel that buying a used honda is a waste of everything there is possibly to waste. I wouldn't buy a new one, let alone a used one. You can get a nice used GM for much less and it won't need anything and will last you longer. But for some weird reason people think japanese cars last longer. Don't get me wrong I myself drive a japanase car (03 Subaru WRX) but I would never buy this car used. NEVER! My other friend tries to prove to me that a toyota is very reliable. He drives a 92 Camry, that leaks absolutly everything and when I say everything I mean it. Engine oil, transmission oil, coolent, brake fluid, power steering fluid and even windshield fluid. When he goes to a gas station he got to fill up all the fluids. The car sux, had transmission replaced (very reliable huh?), suspension fell out. Yes the car sits diagnoly and every bump he goes over he jumps up like 3 inches inside the car. What a POS. This don't end, I can keep listing my friends all day long. Another idiot who drives a 97 accord which is 95% dead, keeps telling me that you cannot use aftermarket oil or air filter (like fram or something else) because the car's power will be reduced bt 33%. I still can't figure out why 33% and not 150%. Honda's have high resale values but they suck big time.

I would say it is a good deal.
Bought used Honda Prelude 88 with 150, 000 miles 4 years ago. Now it has 230, 000 miles. Here is what I speant:
1. rerplaced main seal..replaced timing chain while in there $175
2. replaced water pump $150
3. usual maintenance

not bad for a $1200 car

Bought a 85 Nissan pickup for $1500...it had 150,000 also. I drove until 240,000. nothing but usual maintenance

Well in my country the same car costs about $5000 (if bumped) and $8000 if in a 'good' condition. Would I buy it for $700? Heck yes.
