XBox and DC and GC are out of the question because they aren't available where I live.

I am not rich, but I am big enthusiast so I am tempted into buying PS2, seeing the great number of games available, and seeing the stagnation of the PC game market (Unreal2 WC3 were scheduled for release last year...)

I am quite impressed from the screenshots of GT3, GTA3 and VF games for PS2.
The console worths 2 months sallaries were I live (Macedonia) so buying it is a major investition.
I plan on playing the games on my Samsung Plano 27" Flat TV.

On the other hand I own Tbird 1.4, kt266a mobo (gbyte), 256 mb ddr ram + geforce 3 (280/590 c/m gainward powerpack) on ctx 17" flatscreen monitor.

So, what do you advice me, should I go for the console, are the game interesting...etc etc, I haven't owned I console before so that is why I ask.

Thank's for all you replies

Hell no.

Especially not if it's that big an investment.

Wouldn't be a huge deal for me to buy one but I still wont, just wait for a little while and you'll be able to download a PS2 emulator for free ;)

The console costs total 398$, and the games will be sort of free (I have a friend that sells them so I'll share his personal collection, so the only investition would be the console itself)

I really need some concise oppinion on this subject.

I like consoles because they're so easy to use - you don't have to worry about installing and configuring stuff, and they rarely ever crash. I think they have a different role to PCs (unless you're running linux on your PS2) and as such can peacefully co-exist.

If you're going to do a lot of gaming, or you want some console only titles, or you want something to play with mates after the friday night pub binge, you cant beat a console.

There's your answer right there. I would get one if I had the money. You can play games on your computer that can compare with the PS2 or XBox, but it's just that it's easier to play on the console. Just wait for a couple of months and the price will go down.

One small factor to consider is a dvd player. My Computer is nowhere near my tv, so I could have bought some really long cords and a dvd drive for my computer for much less. However my main reason for PS2 was the sports games, which tend to suck on pc. Well those and the new final fantasy games when they come out.

one more thing, my TV is capable of displaying resolution of 800x600, will the PS2 "transmit" 800x600 or 640x480 graphics ?

When I use the PC it displays 800x600 by default on the TV.

It is such a pain to drag the PC to my upper floor where the TV is...

I am so tempted :< There arent any games for PC interesting lately.
The last good game I've played is Soul Reaver 2 and later I've understood it is a PS2 import.

/me wants PS2 :>
/me is spoiled
/me wants everything /me sees

Don't we all...

The PS2 is a good gaming console which will play many different PS1 and PS2 games. If you want to invest in it, I say go for it, but if you don't play games that much, then save your hard earned money. Your friend has one right? Try his out to see if you like it, and if you do, then either go to his place or get your own :p

i definitely would and have been toying with the idea of getting one lately. Gaming on the computer is sort of an 'escape' for me while i envision playing the PS2 while relaxing on the couch with friends and family, etc. It would simply be another part of the entertainment center i've put together in my family room.

I have a fairly fast PC but sometimes there's just no substitute to sitting down with the PS2. I actually think i play more games on that than on my PC. I have yet to see a PC game that's as good as GT3, MGS, SSX. There's just no substitution sometimes. And the best part is that you don't have to install the games, then patch them, then update your drivers, then tweak your computer to get the best performance. That stuffs fun and all but after a hard day of work I just don't feel like dealing w/ it. Hope this helps.

I did.
When I had a reasonably fast pc (728Mhz, 256mb ram) in 2000 I bought a psx so I could play FF8 when it was released. In the winter 2000 I bought a ps2 because there weren't any pc-games that interested me and I like fighting games and TT looked cool.
So yeah, if you want the games buy one. I'm tempted to buy a X-Box just to get DOA3...

I'd buy all 4 if I could, but so far the only one released here in europe is DOA3. And DOA2 is my fave fighting game. Never tried SoulCalibur as I've never even used a DreamCast, saw one cheap when I visited Germany yesterday though but didn't have enough money :(.
Since DOA originally was based on the Virtua Fighter board I think I'll like VF4, never tried 'em because of the reason above.
SoulCalibur 2, might finally have a chance to try SC now.
Tekken4, have 3 and Tag, 'nuff said. Not my fave but it's amust have anyway.

Been there, done that. Had a PS2 for 3 weeks before I sold it. GT3 and FFX was fun, but I couldn't stand the horrible jaggies on my 43" HD tv. I'm also not that big a fan of console games anymore... gimme a good MMORPG, online FPS, or Warcraft3 6v6 battle royale anyday :)

I wouldn't even consider it anymore. Once you get into lanning on your pc, then consoles lose the most important advantage they once had - socialization. If I didn't lan all the time with my friends, then I would think about it.

Everybody tells you "if it was me", "in my situation" or something like that. That is no advice. Advice would be putting yourself into Gomce' shoes and think what you'd do. You don't have to be rich to own a console and a few kickass games. If you really like the games, it'd definitely be worth it, and no you won't see those "jaggies" because you have a 27" TV not a 43". Just make sure the games you like aren't already on PC, because that would make the PS2 pointless, as long as you're buying PS2 exclusive games, you'll enjoy them. The worst thing you can do is to have your extra money sit there and do nothing, use it! Make an investment, or buy something useful.

I would say that if you can find games that are interesting to you on the PS2, then go ahead and get it. I wouldnt get it just to play 1 or 2 specific games, but if you see a couple you like now and you see a few games in the future that you want to play, i would get it.
