Hell yes I would.

I have only had the reverse, where my company has paid me to NOT use my vacation. More than once.

😕 How is this any different than just taking unpaid time off?

it's not, but it is the first chance i have ever had to take unpaid time off at any company. if someone pulled the unpaid time off stunt at of the placed i've worked, they got laid off/fired - almost no exceptions. i have seen it happen to several people who thought they needed a break for stress/family/etc reasons. they got a break, alright.

the only exception i know of is when a woman's husband committed suicide and she was allowed to take some time off to figure out to do with the kids.

No. I am already usually up against the 400 hour vacation limit. I don't need more time off.

Is that 16.6 24-hour days, 50 8-hour shifts, or something else?

Re: no unpaid time off, that's what I've come to expect from shitty jobs where the employers have all the leverage. I thought things were normally different for more qualified workers?

yeah i just had to take a day off b.c. i was at my max time off... don't need more.. hell i come in on a days off to get extra hours in.

What is the average paid holiday in US, I thought it was like 2 wks?.....usually 4weeks in NZ and extra week after 5 years service, plus public holidays, about 10 days including xmas(4)

Absolutely. I currently get 10 days/80 hours of PTO (that includes any possible sick days) and I'd love another week.

my company is supposedly toying with the idea of allowing people to buy extra vacation time, up to 1 week. if you had the choice, would you do it? there wouldn't be an extra charge, that week would just be effectively unpaid (the cost would be evenly distributed to each pay week).

im on the fence but leaning to yes...

Not to scare you, but the only time I've heard of a company doing that is when they need to cut costs. RIFs might be incoming, and they might consider the people who take advantage of the additional vacation as the prime targets ofr layoffs.

I get 5 weeks paid vacation a week and I have never used more than a week and a half vacation. I would never buy additional time.

So for those who can't figure out how to take a vacation. What's wrong with you? My facebook timeline is always flooded with great ideas of things to see and do. Surely it can't be that hard to at least go lay on a beach somewhere and read a book, go camping, or god forbid the other 20 billion possible vacation ideas.

just because I get cashed out on my vacation does not mean I do not take between 5 and 8 vacations a year. Since I write my own schedules and work at a job that operates 7 days a week I am able to take 5 days off which is good for a nice breather taking only one day off of vacation. by getting cashed out for the vacation I do not take I am able to take many smaller trips for essentially free 😉

One day is not a vacation though? I'm currently finishing up my vacation. Two months in Europe. Yeah it's not in the summer peak but it's two months in Europe. Two months.

I can take 5 days off only using one day of vacation. Even though there have been time when I have accumulated close to 2 months of vacation I would never be allowed to take them at the same time and I would not want to be away from work for that long.

I used to do the same.

You really should try to take more time. Somehow. It's great for mental health and really fun. Pick a new hobby or explore one you already have like seeing different golf courses or scuba diving.

Some years I might, some I might not. I get 3 weeks PTO currently and work a 9/80 shift (Every other Monday I have off).

I already get more than I can really reasonably use, so no.

Same here. I never take all my time and a bunch gets moved to sick time. I think around 40 hours last year. We do a lot of training which we get comp time for and they always use that before your vacation time. Good thing about sick is as long as you don't abuse it and your luck is good you can retire a good bit early. I'm on track for it to be over a year early.

Don't you guys get the company calendar, pick your time off, buy plane tickets way ahead of time, and enjoy 2-4 weeks off?

Mentally I can't work without knowing that I have a big vacation and a couple other smaller ones lined up.

I hardly ever took long vacations. I'd pick a day or two here and there, and usually my notice was that morning. I'd wake up, not feel like working, and call in. I generally prefer that to taking large chunks of time off.

That might work if you only take a week of vacation a year but if you get 20 days and do 1-2 days off here and there that could be 3-4 day weeks for 3 months of the year. I think an argument could be made that it's pretty sweet but how common is that? Combine that with all the holiday weekends and it's not a bad strategy.
