Would You Buy A Tuxedo Online?

At the last minute, I find that my son will be attending his prom this year. Only about 2 weeks left. I found a few places online that sell these things for around $100.00. Trouble is, I'm not sure I'd have time to return them if they didn't fit, or outright sucked in some way. The idea of paying $50.00 for rental seems dumb, if I can buy one for twice that.

Lowest price I can find locally is close to $200.00. Any suggestions on who I should go with online? Tuxedos Online might be OK, but they're pretty far from Ohio. BuyTux.Com seems cool, but they talk about a "14 business day" time frame! Awesome Tuxedo has some nice wool tux packages, but that's a little too steep. Any others?

I rented one...and that's what most people do. You'll pay MAX about $80 for a nice simple tux. It's the simplest way to go.

I would never buy clothes online unless I already know that the exact piece will fit me (IE, I already own it). As for a tux rental, I paid about $120 for mine, $50 plus vest, shoes, shirt, etc.

Just to tell you a $100 dollar tux is going to feel like a $100 dollar tux when he is wearing it.
Polyester blows, which is undoubtedly what the tux is going to be made of.

Go for it if it is all wool.
Think about the collar style you want.
the three main ones are:

notch
peek
shawl

I prefer Shawl

Buying clothes online? No way. I like to get out and have a look and feel of the quality before deciding.
Same goes for a tux. Can't spend 24 hours a day online. ;)

Thanks for that link, M.P.

The local outfit I talked to said they had a Bill Blass for that $200.00 price, but I don't know if it was wool or not. he's still got one more year of high school, so there will probably be at least one more prom then. He may end up going down to his girl friend's prom. His brother may be able to fit into this suit when he gets to high school. I know he'll be attending prom. Now my wife's talking about a limo rental... holy hell!

You will still need a shirt, shoes, cuff links, and tie/cumberbun

My recomendations:
Shirt - Brooks Brothers here
tie/cumberbun - Brooks Brothers ( please get the self tie and not the cheesy pre-tied one)
Shoes - go to the Army PX and get patent leather dress shoes just like the $300 ones for $30
Cuff links - find an inexpensive gold and black set at a local store

Cutting it pretty close...I'm not sure if this is a good idea considering you have 2 wks left. If you had 4 wks, then maybe because you can return, readjust, etc. And what if you don't like it at all? You're son will have to rent one anyways.

Hope your son has fun!

It depends upon where you live.
I think I have worn one of mine 5 times a year for the last 20 years.

For one thing, I'm pretty leery of buying clothes online because of potential fitting issues. I'd be especially leery of buying something like a suit which requires all of the pieces to fit well in order to look good.

The other thing is whether to bother buying a tuxedo for your teenage son who likely isn't completely done growing and whether he'll have occasion to use it before it no longer fits.

About a year ago, I got an offer with my AMEX bill for 25% off a tux at etuxedo.com. Maybe there's still a promo like that going on.

I guess it would be OK if you knew all your measurements, but I wouldn't risk a suit or tux online.

Try to figure out his size and measurements. Check out ebay; I got two high quality tuxes at the same price of a rental. Definitely buy instead of renting, it doesn't cost all that much more and it'll make things a lot easier and most likely make him look a lot better. If he's still growing that just means you don't have to go all out, owning is better than renting for sure.

Just went out yesterday, looking for a rental. Now we're getting prices close to $100.00 for the rentals! Gawd, this is ridiculous. And a limo rental! This is getting plain stupid!

Maybe I will look into a suit instead. I really don't mind coughing up the money for that, now that I've seen these rental prices!

Thanks

Just have a tailor ready to make adjustments. Even if you rented the tux, you'd have to get it fitted. Since you're buying online, you might want to factor in the cost of getting it altered to fit perfect. But it is well worth it to just look your best in the tux, not to mention having it fit better is more comfortable to wear.

I would say just fork over for the Tux rental

I am more than certain any Tux you find for $100 will be a joke, at least with the rental you will get everything you need (Shirt, Tie, Cufflinks, Shirt buttons...etc) it will be freshly cleaned and pressed, you just open the bag and put it on....

for the limo rental just make sure he splits it with his friends, if he isn't splitting it and only wants to go with his date and if he has his liscence just rent him a drop top mustang or something from Budget so at least he can go in style....

I wish I went to my prom, and when my kid goes I am going to go all out for them.

good luck.

oh and glenn nice call with the brooks brothers stuff, I try to shop there almost exclusivly (outlet mostly), very conservative but very high quality.
