Manufacturers recommend that you have a complete overhaul on a mechanical (non-battery driven) watch every 3-5 years.

Rolex wants ~$500 for it's recommended service, you have to ask yourself will my Rolex appreciate >$500 every 3-5 years?

(I just had mine serviced.)

Attempting to convince yourself that a Rolex is a wise or economical purchase is just stupid.

<--Rolex owner that doesn't live in a fantasy world where his watch appreciates more than cash drawing interest...

Well, I was told by the jeweler that even though it is recommended, if the watch is working flawlessly, it is not needed.

So you're looking @ an Explorer II?

Also, please notice I mentioned I own & wear a Rolex😀

I get a kick out of showing it to the Residents in my hospital & mentioning to them my watch is older than they are😀

No, I said in the OP, I am looking at a new DateJust.

My God, that has to be the ugliest thing I've seen since a horny toad!

:Q

Well, I have had at least 200 compliments on it. Anyway, I didn't buy it to impress Anandtech members.......🙂 Do you happen to drive a Pontiac Aztec??

1. I hate wearing watches.
2. I don't wear jewelry, except for my wedding ring. Rolex goes wayyyyy beyond functionality. A 2.99 digital watch is functional... it might even have a stopwatch. Paying hundreds of times that amount, IMHO, is more for a status symbol, either to yourself or to other people. If I had the money to blow on a Rolex, I'd rather just donate it to a charity. I'd feel better about it then.

you'll get more comments for the rolex than any other 2.99 piece.

my bf had a rolex from the late 70's and it still worked great. for a watch that was over 30 years old, he paid under 1k for it. wound up reselling it for about 1k.

they are the ultimate in watches to own. i personally would buy an omega for myself (rolex ladies watches are just butt ugly) but with the larger face and the simple date justs, the rolex is a great investment and something that you can possibly pass on to your children. my bf's dad did that with this omega he had from his wedding.
