IMHO the refurb cameras might be better than the new ones. I suspect somebody actually takes the time to check and calibrate them versus the ones that fly off the assembly line.

If I could find a refurb 5D MKII, I would buy it in a heartbeat if it were a Canon refurb. Factory refurbs are each individually tested whereas new items are normally lot tested.

i wouldn't hesitate to buy one. But a used 5D was still cheaper, and I haven't had a problem with my 300D, 20D, or 5D (40D i actually got new on ebay, "unexpectedly" heh). *knocks on wood*

I would normally say no, I would not buy a refurb, but the general consensus here appears to be very positive. At this point, after reading all of the comments here, I'd have to say I would at least try it once.

My 40D is refurbished. I also had a lens that was as well. No problems with both. Would never hesitate to buy one again in the future.

As long as the refurb was by the OEM, I would not hesitate.

How do you find refurbs? I went to Adorama, and it's not obvious. At or near the top of my wishlist right now are:

Pentax K-x
Sony A330

Choosing is another thread, but I couldn't find a way to see if they have refurbs for them at Adorama. How might I go about finding them?

Oh, OK. If I do a search there on the string "canon refurbished" I get a bunch of hits, but if I search on "pentax refurbished" I get nothing. If I search on "sony refurbished" I get just one hit, not a DSLR. :\

Unfortunately, that means we don't have any in stock at present.

Refurbished inventory isn't like new inventory - we can't order it in. We have to wait until the manufacturers contact us when they have a batch to sell.

Yes, as long as it's from a reputable dealer. A lot of "refurbished" products are actually returns. Might have been nothing wrong with it, person just had buyers remorse.

it's funny back in the 35mm days used gear was always the way to go. Now I don't get why it's not other than the entitlement and other issues people have today.

The other day I ordered a Canon ELPH 100 HS at Amazon through one of their 3rd party sellers that's supposed to be certified Canon refurbished. What kind of warranty can I expect on this? I can't see anything at Canon's website concerning warranties of any kind, much less refurbs.

If you're talkin' Nikon or Canon, Refurbished is better than new. Each Refurb has been calibrated and checked over individually by a skilled technician. Those coming off the assembly line are under QA where only one every now and then is checked out. I've bought 3 DSLRs and all three were Refurbished by Nikon.

My D5100 is a refurb (from Adorama), and just like the D60 I got before it, it was immaculate out of the box. I have no problem buying refurbs from reliable manufacturers who deal through ethical retailers.

I bought a used A35 from Adorama. It was like new... probably just a return. I'm guessing that's what a lot of "refurbs" are

T2i here, in fact I don't think mine ever left the factory beforehand. Still had the clear plastic protection on the lcd. Been going good for a year and a half

What's the warranty on a certified Canon refurb?

I believe it was 90day

I've never had a problem with a refurb; they're calibrated and individually tested, so they come out to be great deals.

it depends who does the refurbin' - if its a 3rd party that refurbishes it, then maybe not.. but if it, say gets refurbed from canon themselves, then that would be no problem :)

I have a refurbed t2i and a 50mm f/1.4 that I picked up from Canon directly. I picked up refurbed 10-22mm and 28mm f/1.8 lenses from Adorama that have worked out quite nicely. Only my 55-250mm lens was purchased brand new.

I'm happy with my collection but if I ever do decide to expand I would have no problem going with refurbs again.
