Would you buy a GeforceFX 5900Ultra for $500?

Well, seeing as how expensive the GeforceFX 5800 cards sold for, I would not be surprised if NVIDIA sold the GeforceFX 5900Ultra for $500. I have a Radeon 9700 Pro right now am I am considering whether I should sell it. I would do it if the GeforceFX 5900 Ultra came out at around $400 but $500 is just to rich for my blood. Even if the GeforceFX 5900Ultra was much faster than the Radeon 9800 Pro, had a quiet fan and had fixed the image quality issue for their AF, I still think $500 would be to expensive for me. Oh well, I guess I'll find out later this week. Hopefully it will be around $400 because I can't afford a $500 graphics card. :(

I would pay $400 for the ATI 9800. I wouldn't pay $400 for a GeforceFX 5900 Ultra.

If you can swing $400, I don't see why $500 would be such a big deal. I could understand if it were the difference between $500 and $250...

Anyway...

I know that I personally am not buying ANY new video card for a while. I have a 9700 Pro and it's plenty fast in everything. The 9800 Pro is barely faster than it. I think that the 9700 Pros are the perfect balance in price/performance right now and you should just save your money unless the 5900 absolutely r@pes it.

my limit on video cards is around $150. the most expensive one i ever bought was about a year or so ago, i paid $200 for a visiontek geforce4 TI4200 as a birthday gift to my dad. then about 3 months ago i picked myself up a asus geforce4 ti4200 8x for alot cheaper, big differance between it and my voodoo5. it always pays to wait :D

Its just a moral issue I guess. I know how complex video cards are getting but I still think they should not cost more than $400 right now. Especially considering how long before they are replaced. $400 is acceptable. $500 is just to much to lose when in a year or so, the same performance will be around $200. The most I have ever paid for a graphics card was $350 for a Geforce3 Ti 500. Doom III kicks my Radeon 9700 Pro's butt so I know I'll have to replace it before Doom III comes out. I could overclock the Radeon 9700 Pro but I read on one of Anand's reviews that it doesn't make much of a difference. Also, I think games are starting to make use of 1GB of ram so I might upgrade from 512MB to 1GB too. I also have a 20" LCD so the higher resolution I can play, the better. I hope the GeforceFX 5900 Ultra comes in dual DVI. Its stupid to have a single VGA + a single DVI configuration now a days.

Wait a sec here... "how expensive the GeforceFX 5800 cards sold for..." that assumes you could even get one, then wanted or liked sub-par performance, two used up expansion slots, and a noise as loud as a vacuum cleaner.... and that is not even exagerration. Why would anyone want to pay for the top NVIDIA card unless it does not suck like the last one did. Granted, Geforce Ti cards were awesome. I would wait until that card is out for awhile and proven as the top dog before I paid one penny for it. I would recommend "jumping on the bandwagon" of NVIDIA marketing, unless their product is PROVEN superior.

I agree with you on that. ;) I still disagree with you about The Matrix, though. :D

I don't know why you think the 5900 will be coming out for $500 when $400 is the established price for the top of the line card. This is going to replace the 5800 as the top dog, so it will take over the top price spot. I find it hard to believe they would leave the 5800 Ultra at $400 and bump the 5900 to $500. It's like when Intel releases a new chip, its usually around $600 and it bumps everything below it down a level.

HELL NO! That crap cost 2x more than 9700Pro, while having actual performance slightly higher. Its unnecessary to spend 250+ on VGA. Better wait 6 months, when the heat is off, and buy it 50-100 bux cheaper.

Dont chase the technology: it will always be one step ahead.

I think you're confusing the 5900 Ultra with the 5800 Ultra.

I might if it buys me significantly better performance in some games that I like playing.

But my wife and I make good money so we have a good chunk of expendable income every month...

When I have the money, I will either go 9700 or 9800 pro.

Ive always stuck with nVidia since my GeForce 256 Ann Pro, but this time im looking to ATI.

If I had cash to burn I would buy it. Why? Because its going to become a collectors item quick.

in a word? no.

You'd have to have a serious excess of cash to spend money on something that is completely off the value chart. I'd get a raedon.
