Would you buy a Corsair Force GT 180GB for $194?

If you didn't really need it? 😕

but...

sort of wanted it? :hmm:

Because I just did! :awe:

Now am I going to regret it?

Looks like a great deal! Where did you get it? I would say you should be fine, I hear the new SF controllers are maturing better than their predecessors with firmware updates.

Enjoy! And post a link if there are more 😀

I'm starting to wonder if this was a good deal or not and am having some buyers remorse. Strangely enough, I can still cancel at Newegg. ???

For $1.05/Gb, I would probably take a chance on the reliability of the Sandforce controller. Otherwise, the benchmark speed itself is probably near the Crucial m4 256 GB, Intel SSD 510 250 GB, and Samsung 830 SSD 128 GB. In the real world, it probably ranks at the very top.

To be honest, I don't think most would notice a difference between the fastest SSD and middle-of-the-pack. I only notice a difference between my Samsung 830 256Gb and my lowly OCZ Solid 2 120Gb (with 34ns Intel NAND) every now and again, especially with specific intensive programs that used to take 7 seconds to load, now only take 3-4 seconds.

Anyway, good luck. 🙂

I think it's a great deal, usually the best deals ($1/gb range) are only on 128gb and smaller. I'm hoping to find such a deal on a 256gb drive in the next few months (in Canada). If I can get one for $300 I'd be happy (current gen).

Well, remorse or not, I missed my chance to cancel it yesterday as it shipped early yesterday morning. Now I'm sort of excited to get it and install it this weekend and them move a few SSD's around. Might just give an older (but very solid - no issues even after two years) OCZ 128 GB Vertex to a friend.

I'm such a sucker for a "deal"! 😛 (Zap, don't say a darn word!!! )

1 dollar/gb is quite quite nice. Very hard to beat. And next year when SSDs are 50c/gb, you can buy another and have a nice raid-0 setup that is pushing 1gb/s throughput.

Just checked the Fatcash and appears the 3% was for "Marketplace orders" only so I only received 1.3% cash back. Makes the deal around $194.xx for $1.08 per GB. Still not much to complain about.

I was wondering if I should get a bigger SSD as I had pretty much run out of room of late; then I realized I'd stupidly had my main iTunes folder on the darn thing. That freed up 30GB right there. I can't see how you could possibly go wrong with that SSD, especially at that price. It will likely be somewhat faster than the others you have lying around as well.

You filthy impulse buyer you... 😉 very nice! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. If you don't mind my asking, what kind of system is it going into?

Core I5 2500k on Biostar P67 board with 16GB PC1600 DDR3 and 2 - 2 TB Hitachi spinners for storage and a 1GB - GTX460 card. Currently has 160GB Intel 320 drive. That drive will swap to the downstairs Core I5 system and replace an OCZ Vertex (which is going to a friend).

You should actually save the OCZ Vertex for an enemy. Do you know anyone in the Taliban? lol I kid. 🙂

I know the history of the Vertex/Agility/Solid series but this particular drive has been running just fine for just over 2 years. I'll make sure that he has a good backup plan in place, lol! 😛

I started out with a 256GB M4 and a 120GB Intel G2 SSD in my machine. Felt I needed more space. Bought a Kingston HyperX 120GB..........felt that these three 'single' drive units needed 'friends'.

Now i have

2 x 256GB M4 in RAID 0
2 x Intel G2 120GB in RAID 0

but not enough money yet for me to buy another Kingston HyperX................yet.

I need to go to SSDs Anonymous...........

$190 for a 180GB Force GT? I'll take 5 please.

Even if it was "just" the non-GT version I'd still take em.

Perhaps it would be better if you stuck to the topic at hand rather than taking potshots at people who haven't even commented on this thread.

And fwiw, I've heard good things about the gt.

Thanks for that. There have been 19 reviews on Newegg for the last few months and 89% are 5 star with 11% at 4 star. Not many reviews but ZERO bad reviews. Maybe not enough sold to show up on the stats yet.

About 2 months ago, I went back and read every single article on ssd's that Anand has written since his first ssd-palooza. I don't specifically remember the article it was in, but I do remember that he talked about why the gt was so much better than the regular force series.

regular 3 series uses asynch nand.. GT uses synch nand. Would be similar to comparing an OCZ Agility 3 to a Vertex 3.

and yes.. they are newer than others who did much of the early legwork to get sandforce and Intel to get their "you know what" together for them(Corsair and others) to come into the SF-2281 game with stronger legs off the starting line. Not to mention they've sold far less of these drives to this point as well. Just visit their forum if you want the scoop on potential pitfalls with these controllers.

180GB version will be somewhere between the 120GB and 240GB versions speed. Would be splitting some mighty thin hairs at this level though.
