Would you accept this offer for the 4870X2?

Hello everyone,

I had a 4870x2 video card that kept overheating and would stop working. I had to send it back 3 times already because of the same issues. The company now want to offer me a Sapphire HD5850 1GB GDDR5 PCI-E TOXIC as a replacement.
To be honest, i don't know too much about the new cards.
Would you make the deal? I do mostly gaming online with everything set very high.
I guess if I said no, they would send me another 4870X2.

thanks!

Take it. Not quite as fast but much more reliable. If you wanted to negotiate, you could ask them for a 5870, which is about as fast as your old card.

Hmm. I would rather take a 6850 or 6870 with those out now. Otherwise, a 5870 would be good too (it's essentially 2x4870 anyway).

Ask for the 5870, settle for the 5850 if you can't get them to agree. Just be sure to argue the fact that the 4870x2 is of equal performance to the 5870 and from a pricing standpoint is more in line with the 5870 as well.

Argue that your 4870x2 has 1600 shaders and the 5850 only has 1440, that is not acceptable to you.

I would tell them to give you a 5870. the toxic 5850 is pretty good, but not as good as a 5870.

It's a card that has had the same issue over and over again so why take it back?

Plus:

Single GPU = no multi-GPU headaches. MUCH better power/noise/heat in idle and load. Not that much slower speed especially when overclocked. Great overclockability. DX11. Probably higher resale value down the road. It's a no-brainer to take the 5850 TOXIC.

Go for a 5870, if they won't do that.. ask for a 6870 then 6850. If that fails, go with the 5850, it's a great card! I'd take that trade, but no reason to not bargain for something that "you feel is equivalent".

whats with the 6850 talk? you guys do realize the 6850 is slower than all those other cards. I would try to get a 5870 or at least 6870. the 5850 is okay if they wont do that but it is certainly slower than your 4870x2. and of course the 6850 is even slower than 5850.

5850/6850 are very, very close in performance. ~1-4FPS difference, indiscernible (the 6850 can be faster in cases). I personally would rather have a 6850 over 5850 if given the choice, honestly. Newer, better resale when the time comes being latest gen.

but as for as brand new cards go the 6870 should be the minimum that they give him as even that is slower than his 4870x2.

Same issues with the same card, Sapphire 4870x2, on my 3rd RMA and finally emailed them and said hey my warranty is up soon, the other cards you sent are DOA or last a week, whatcha gonna do for me.

So should have my new 5870 1Gb next week. Dunno why they would send a 5850, at least the 5870 is on par with the 4870x2.

A bit off topic but since a couple of you guys are directly dealing with Sapphire's customer service, how is that customer service? Wondering if they are a viable option for me for future cards.

For myself, when emailing their tech's back and forth, its not too bad, but I have asked numerous questions about the cards and never get any answer's, they just seem to want to know if they work or not, then put it into an RMA. Though I do get replies very quick, has been as quick as 5 minutes after mailing them sometimes, during normal business hours.

The RMA's take forever, though I'm sending east to west coast. 2 Year warranty, dunno might go with XFX next time, heard they have a lifetime warranty, though not sure what their customer service is like.

The only thing I've paid through sapphire is $15 to 3 day it to Cali with $500 insurance.

Yea ask for the 5870 or 6870.

But if not I would take the 5850 due to power and knowledge it will probable last a lot longer.

I agree.
He can't force them to do anything though, it's not worth small claims court to get a 5870 or 6870 out of them.

Thanks, sigian. I asked because my bro and I both had horrible CS experiences with XFX. Their warranty sounds nice but it's tough to actually use well. That's why I'm considering Sapphire if they are decent. I guess I don't really need them to answer questions for me, just an efficient, hassle-free RMA process is fine with me.

Thank you all for your help!

I did request a 5870 card but they said the manufaturer had not sent them anymore and did not have them available at the time otherwise they would have offered that to me. The reason they offered me the 5850 was because it was readily available. I then asked about the 6870. They didn't respond to that question but told me they would could send me another 4870X2.
I replied that I after going through 3 of these already I didn't want another, send me the 5850. They wouldn't let me wait around to see if they got a 5870 in stock at a later time. I have no clue if the 5850 is new or a refurbished. I honesly just don't want to deal with more of the 4870x2 problems. Hopefully it will turn out ok and it's better than nothing I guess.

My experience with Sapphire? Well, they ask you to trouble shoot and reply to you via email ( no live person calls you). You have to pay to ship the card back but at least no hastle about the RMA. It does take a bit of time to get your card back ( 3-4 weeks). At least you have a 2 warranty and they stand by it.
My brother had the same card but a different brand. It only had a 1 yr warranty and when it messed up, he was SOL.I guess I can't complain too much.
