Would YF-23 be able to maneuver like F-22?

They can barely afford the F-22 as it is...

Low speed maneuverability is overrated. When you have that much stealth, that powerful of a radar, and killer AIM-120s, it will rarely come down to a close range fight. In the event that it does, newer fighters are equipped with off-bore helmet-mounted cueing systems anyway.

It's hard to believe that just over a 100 years ago we were pushing planes off sand dunes.

Cool vid.

True, but we don't normally shut down planes that are 100 miles away. Watch this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...kdW26M&feature=related

the F-14s let the Mig-23s got so close that they had dogfight them. Cool vid though, the Migs were kidding with themselves.

the yf-23 was ugly as sin considering that huge belly/underbody exhaust. side intakes are so much sexier.

What are you talking about? The F-22 looks just like an evolution of F-15, while the YF-23 looks like nothing we have today, 20 years later!

Just because it looks different and uses a completely different design does not make it necessarily better.

Heh actually wikipedia says the YF-23 has the cockpit and forward sections taken directly from the F15 to save time and money.

Lately Lockheed's been able to put up a better show than Northrop or Boeing for those big contracts.

I guess proven manufacturing tech >> exotic stuff.

Oh, I didn't read into that. I just went and found pictures to see that he was talking about a different appearance.

We said that with the F-4, F-14, and other planes in recent history. The simple fact is that as awesome as it is to blow someone out of the sky before they're even in visual range, it's just not practical. The F-4 was even built without a gun because they thought their missiles were so freaking awesome that guns were obsolete, but they were frequently mounted with an external gun pod because of all the dogfights they were being forced into. And, the longest range kill made by an F-14 was (IIRC) in fact a mistaken friendly plane, but they didn't know that because they couldn't even see them. Missiles definately have their place, but so do guns and maneuverability.

BTW, the YF-19 won the contract. 😛

screw u, i liked guld. isamu was an annoying asshat, the generic hotshot pilot with attitude. :Q
GULD DIED FOR THEM. DIED FOR THEM.🙁

That's a nice video. I've been at a few airshows were they fly the same routine. Very impressive.

I even took a cool picture of the F-22 with its bomb bay doors open during the part of the display shown at 2:55 in the video.

I don't know much about that incident and didn't watch the vid (at worK) but my thinking is that the tomcats weren't loaded with medium or long range missiles on that mission. If they had some aim-120's loaded they could have fired first at about 20 miles out but the rule of engagement was probably fire only if fired upon. Therefore they probably had to let the migs come in close to see if they're really hostile.

I watched that whole thing. NOVA, tricking me into learning since the 80s.

It was Northrop Grumman that designed this aircraft and it was all politics in the decision of the contract. The YF-23 was superior in design and performance, but cost a lot more. Northrop also won the contract to do the F-22's radar so you cant award the same company with both multi million dollar contracts...
