Would voluntarily dating a "pederast" mess you up for life?

Will student "A" have problems in future relationships?

  • Regardless of sex, they will develop normally

  • Boys will develop normally, girls will not

  • Girls will develop normally, boys will not

  • They will have stunted development regardless

Let me explain:

For some random reason the wife and I got to discussions about schoolteachers hooking up w/ students; outside of teachers violating the ethics of student/teacher relationships the wife thinks that the kids will end up inevitably scarred/unbalanced somehow; I would disagree, especially if this is a consensual relationship.

This is the details of our discussion:

- Student "A" is 16/17, regardless of sex
- Teacher "B" is older, say 25+, or even 30+, whatever
- They engage in a mutual relationship, physical, emotional, whatever
- The teacher gets caught and sent to jail, the relationship ends at this point (obviously)

Now, I say; this age is when kids normally start dating/figuring out the complexities of social interaction. Even if a 16yr. old is to date another 16 yr. old, they're going to be inexperienced and will make lots of mistakes in their relationship, of which they will learn from and (hopefully) improve as they date more and more people/age. If the entire relationship is consensual - not considering the legalities of such a relationship - student "A" will grow from the experience and move on; their future relationships will not be stunted any more than any other normal teenager.

Wife says: student "A" is going to be distressed/stunted, they are already or at least more susceptible to be unbalanced if they are dating someone much older than they are - and counting the fact of the student being possibly feeling outcast as their experience is outside of/against the grain of the norm, and will stunt their future development.

Your thoughts?

I don't think you can answer this with hypotheticals. It depends on the individuals involved, their emotional maturity, etc.

My guess is that you're right and wife is wrong. Such a relationship would most likely not "scar for life" the younger person involved.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pederasty

The Meriam Webster dictionary defines Pederast as "one who practices anal intercourse especially with a boy" [1]. Pederasty or paederasty ( /ˈpɛdəræsti/, UK /ˈpiːdəræsti/) is an intimate relationship between an adult and an adolescent boy outside his immediate family. The word pederasty derives from Greek (paiderastia) "love of boys",[2] a compound derived from παῖς (pais) "child, boy" and ἐραστής (erastēs) "lover".

Historically, pederasty has existed as a variety of customs and practices within different cultures. The status of pederasty has changed over the course of history; at times it has been considered an ideal, and at other times a crime.

In European history, its most structured cultural manifestation was Athenian pederasty, which became most prominent in the 6th century BCE. Greek pederasty's various forms were the subject of philosophic debates in which the carnal type was unfavorably compared with erotic yet spiritual and moderate forms.

The legal status of pederasty in most countries is currently determined by whether or not the boy has reached the local age of consent. Where and when it is illegal, it is treated as a form of child sexual abuse.

16 and 17 could be legal depending on the state or country you are in.

And you are more correct to the actual question.

Way to get hung up on the semantics there, buddy. Now I'm definitely not going to change the thread title. :colbert:

OK, if you want to keep defending man on boy love in a public forum, go right ahead.

Classical civilization pederasty is pretty interesting. If you are interested in sexual norms, do yourself a favor and actually researching the subject.

Oh yeah I agree; sexual norms across cultures and time periods, nevermind subliminally suggested norms of beauty in contemporary western culture and its consequences is a very interesting and very widely researched topic across several academic disciplines.

Doesn't mean I'm changing the thread title, though.

Not necessarily, I'm almost 21 and I haven't figured out that stuff yet :hmm:

I don't recall saying that you finish at a certain age :colbert:
