would this upgrade even make a noticable difference?

I'm running a p4 1.7 (old system, i know...even my notebook is faster). I currently have a 9500pro and 1.0gb of pc133 memory. I am considering purchasing an agp x850xtpe as a stopgap until i build a new system from scratch early next year. Is this a viable upgrade or is the cpu going to bottleneck it to the point its not worth it. If i could get nearly double the performance of my 9500pro i would be happy. possible? Thanks for any replies

yeah the cpu would bottleneck a little too far for an 850xtpe. a good matchup for that would be a 6600gt/x800gt or a 6800nu.

Same with the x800xl? Im trying to get the absolute most out of this thing for the next few months. ... I hear that if you play at higher resolutions, you can transfer some of the load from your processor to your gpu. is that true to any extent? thanks.

get the 6600gt. spending too much for a card you'll be adding to a future wouldn't be smart considering the price you'll pay now may be double what u pay when making ur new build

With games, you will notice a performance increase. Otherwise, you won't see anything. I'll say just hold up and wait until you're ready to build a new one.

I would agree with Jiggz on this one. Just wait until you're ready to build a new rig and then go for some good components.

The cost of a X850XTPE right now will outweigh the performance increase you will see in your machine.

like waffles said, the rest of your parts is a definate bottleneck.
Its like those sand/time chamber things, the X850XTPE is putting out so much info, but the rest can only process it slowwwwwwwwly

So wait, until you get a new comp, then throw that video card in there to let it shine at its true level.

thanks for the responses guys. ordered a 660gt this morning. i still plan on spending 1500+ on a new rig in early - mid january. i will have to buy a new vc anyway as i will be using a mobo with pci-e.

Good to hear! :)

Be sure to share with us about the performance upgrades after you get your 2nd 6600GT
