Would this idea work?

Goes like this: company gives away free DVRs with free service. You supply your demographic information to them (age, sex, $$, interests).

Company makes $ by showing targeted on-screen advertisements, or targeted commercials instead of the ones orginally broadcasted.

Got this idea a few years back while watching 60 Minutes and noticed I could care less about arthritis relief.

The only way I could somewhat see this working is for the service to automatically put ad banners or something similar at the bottom of the screen at all times. Since the TV screen is a fixed size, either some of the program would be covered, or the program would have to be compressed or resized. Very few people would stand for that, and the idea would fail.

Good luck with the lawsuits from advertisers who actually paid to advertise on the show.

So....you're getting the ability to remove intermittent advertisements in exchange for forced, always-on advertisements?

If I need to buy worthless crap, I will go to the store myself and browse for it. I don't want a corporation telling me what they think I should need.

My ideal commercial would be one that tells about useful products, and admits to their shortcomings, preferably told by the person(s) in charge of designing and/or manufacturing the product, rather than a marketer. It would not be flashy, no irritating computer-generated "music" in the background, no yelling to get attention. I do rather doubt that such an advertisement will ever go on the air.
