Would this card be excellent for running World of Warcraft

Yes, but I would go for the 128MB version. It performs a lot better than the 256MB card. What is your budget?

If you have 512mb RAM, consider upgrading that too. The difference between 512 and 1gb in WoW is like night and day

For $6 over your budget, I would recommend this card, if you don't have any problems buying refurbished. refurbished 256bit card

As far as lag goes, it all depends on how much the server is being slammed. I've heard, due to the popularity of "W.O.W", they have been having lag issues. I have a friend who gets 3Mb down on cable and he has been bumped quite a few times.

Your budget for a new video card is the same price of a new retail 4200. So it really makes no sense to upgrade. The 9600P will only offer you minimal performance gain, and it won't be worth your hard earn money. You need at least a 9800p to even think about upgrading.

I got mine 2 years ago for $80, figure the newer cards would be a little bit better and cheaper than they were back then.

I'd also be interested in a higher end Nvidia, but they all seem to be PCI-E and stuff now.

The 9600 pro is basically a 4600 with hardware dx9 support which will do aa/af better... I wouldn't expect much better performance at all. On lag, do you mean connection lag or choppy framerates? Big difference, a lot of people mix the two up.

WoW is very CPU dependant so you need a heavily overclocked XP, A64, P4CorE 3ghz+ to go with that card if you don't already have one.

Would this be a decent upgrade?

no, not IMO, but as i'm nice 8), i have dug up a nice deal for you Twice as good. $3 more. Enjoy

Don't get caught in that 256mb crap (it has no significant performance advantages). If you plan on spending ~$100, just get a 9600 Vanilla and OC it a bit, they are roughly $80. If you plan to spend more than $100 I would highly recommend you go with a 6600GT, the performance difference between a 9600pro/6600gt is pretty incredible. (you can find PCI-E 6600GT's for ~$160 and AGP's for $180>)

I must agree with the above, especially if you are considering, as someone suggested, that 9700 for $139 -- throw in another $40 and get yourself a nVidia 6600 GT 128Mb -- you'll be set for a MUCH longer time.. Ciao.

Don't spend $138 on a new 9700pro. Go to the For Sale/For Trade forum and buy a used 9500pro, 9700pro, or 9800pro, depending on how much you're willing to spend.
