I am about to call animal control on my neighbor that lets her dog off leash wandering the neighborhood crapping in my yard. I talked to her and she kind of blew me off. Irresponsible dog owners are a dime a dozen it seems.

Some people don't realize their dogs are barking. My dogs rarely bark when I'm at home, but apparantly they bark non-stop when I leave. I had a neighbor call the cops without even asking me to do something about it. Not sure why you wouldn't at least give someone the courtesy of asking them before calling the cops.

All that made me do was let them keep barking just to piss him off since there are like 3 warnings from the cops before you even get a fine.

Oh I wouldn't call the cops with out chatting with the person first. Like my neighbor that lets the dog run off on its own, I talked to her first and asked her to keep it on a leash. The next time I see it off leash I will call animal control though. I don't want some german shepard mix running loose where I let my kids play, not to mention shitting all over my yard.

I feel your pain man, got a neighbor with 2 dogs that she just leaves out all the time and they bark at the slightest breeze. City of Denver won't do anything about it.. honestly my wife and I want to move anyway, so sadly I've given up on fixing the problem and just can't wait to leave.

Anyway, OP...being you have only 5' between houses and dogs are allowed...this is sort of something you bought into.

Unless your area has a law about dogs being outside 24/7, then they are following that rule.

Barking is another matter, but if you aren't going to REALLY confront them (I doubt you even talked to them at all being you are afraid to call the police), then again...you get to deal with it.

I also like the suggestion of getting a dog bark detector and pounding the dog's ears with high frequency.
I didn't know they existed.

Good point there. Most cities have noise pollution laws but almost any cities that do don't enforce this law. It's a sad infinite circle.

Calling the cops yourself seems the best option for now. If that doesn't do it, upscale.
 
City? The dog should be trained not to bark. Valid complaint.

Rural? The dog's job is to bark. Not much of a valid complaint.

Then, there's a big gray scale between the two extremes.

Except the neighbors will know who called the police. Better for the OP to obtain some electronic devices that can hurt the dogs ears should he bark while outside.

the police have been called a couple times, but sporadically and only resulting in the owners taking the dog inside that night and returning to status quo the next day.

but I figure, if I'm calling the police every night, they're just going to think it's a neighbor with an axe to grind.
 
Call your attorney and have him write a letter to the dog's owner. Or get a Cease and Desist order. Once they see you are serious about getting the issue resolved, they will do something or else end up in court.
 
If you report it, that is good. But ensure that your 90 year old landlady also does, since she might get better treatment, and backs up the fact that the dog is a nuisance (and you're just not a bitter neighbor).

My dog rarely barks, if he does for no good reason, he gets banished inside the house. He got the idea really quickly, and now only if there is someone completely unknown walking up to our house will he ever bark.

isnt' that the point? As others have said, check local regulations, you may have the law on your side, but you'll likely end up pushing papers to get anything done with that. If there is nothing to be had by that method, can you knock on their door everytime the dog barks past a certain hour and inform them the dog is barking? Say 10pm?
