I was wondering what other people thought about this. Would Gore have run us into more or less debt than Bush? I think he would've run us into more (can't find the source anymore, but he planned huge amounts on environmental issues and to hugely increase the war on drugs). He was more sympathetic to the welfare state than Clinton, so I don't think he would've continued Clinton's semi-responsibility on fiscal matters.

Me and a professor (he was a good guy even though he was assistant Sec. of State under Bush) I had a year ago disagreed with each other as to whether Gore would've invaded Iraq and been more extreme with the war on terror. I think Gore would've been way more extreme. It was indicated to me in the 2000 debates, where Gore defended an interventionist stance and policing the world, while the pre-9/11/01 Bush was against it. I think if Clinton intervened on "human-rights" grounds all the times he did, then Gore certainly would've. Gore voted for first Gulf War. Gore had Lieberman as his running mate. Also, I think Gore would've armed the military much more because he would've confiscated assault weapons from civilians.

Honestly, I think we'd be a military dictatorship had Gore and Lieberman won.

We would have a huge $ surplus, all wars would be ceased, and we would be flying around in electric car planes, there would be peace in the middle east as Iranians, Jews and Palestinians walk hand in hand. And the US economy would be soaring as we manufacture and sell lead free toys to China.

Less debt. No tax cuts for wealthy and much less likely to have had Iraq War waste of money.

This. Gore would probably invade Afghanistan since there was actually a reason to do that (I hope you guys still remember 9/11). The Iraq war would not happen simply because there was no real reason for it to happen. Was Iraq linked to 9/11 in any way? No. Word around the camp fire is that it was implicated when a terrorist was being tortured physically interrogated. Not only is that basic common sense, but this actually did happen in the US and it was a famous supreme court case that at least 1 person in the government would have known about, assuming the people in the Bush administration actually went to high school when they weren't drinking or doing coke.

Alright so US law says you can't use torture confessions as evidence, but in Bush's magical creationist fantasy land it can be used as evidence to start a war. That makes perfect sense. Worst president in the history of the union.

Considering that CONGRESS spends money and that the Republican CONGRESS was fiscally responsible with Clinton as President, I would assume that the Republican CONGRESS would have spent much less under Gore no matter how much he wanted to spend. Remember that presidents have a good deal of power to make Congress spend less but less power to make them spend more. When the Democrats took Congress in '06 they would have spent even more than they did under Bush - probably way more, as they would have an additional six years of relatively modest spending increases to make up. Other than that it's hard to have a clear picture of Gore as the man apparently has no core beliefs, but it's fair to say that the economy would have been harmed by the actions Gore could have taken unilaterally to fight global warming. (I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt here, assuming that he is a true believer who honestly believes that he is of a superior class not to be held to the same standards, as opposed to a crass and opportunistic liar willing to wreck his country for his own glory and treasure.)

I assume that he would have invaded Afghanistan, but again, there is no way to know for sure. The man simply has no consistent core beliefs on which to base a judgment. I can't imagine him seeing it through for this long, nor doing the troop surge, and I doubt he would have reopened the war with Iraq.

Why do you assume a Democratic Party Congressional resurgence under President Gore? Why would the American public have repudiated the Republican Congress without the debacle of the Bush/Cheney administration? By your own reasoning, a Republican Congress and Democratic President would have held spending in check, giving us a continued budgetary surplus rather than the Bush deficits. Remove also the Iraq Intervention, and the public would have had little incentive to change parties.

Quite possibly true. It's also possible that a President Gore might have inspired Americans to elect more Democrats so as to enjoy even more peace and prosperity, or that Gore's enactment of global warming regulations via the executive branch might have led to his ouster in '04. However my wooden leg has scratched my crystal ball so I cannot say either way. Therefore I assumed as few changes as possible.

Likely. I think it's fair to say by now there would be major unemployment, a shrinking, uncompetitive manufacturing sector, and thousands of people losing their homes.

Oh wait...

I bet there would have been 50% fewer middle eastern wars though.

Gore would probably have just ordered a few air strikes in Afghanistan and called it a day, since that was about the limit of "interventionist policy" under Clinton.

So: $1+ trillion saved along with 4,000+ American lives, tens of thousands fewer soldiers crippled, hundreds of thousands of civilian lives.

That would be worth a little cap-n-trade.
