Hello folks

My current setup is :

Amd Athlon 2500XP+ Barton
MSI KT333 chipset motherboard
1GB PC3200 Corair Value Select Ram
Seagate 160 7200rpm PATA HDD
ATI Radeon 9700 Pro AIW

I was thinking of upgrading the video card to the GEforce 6600GT. Would it be worth the upgrade? Looking to play the following games :

1. Quake 4
2. 1942 Battlefield 2

I primarily game at 1024*768 resolution

Any kinda advice would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

6600GT would certainly let you play at that res with slightly reduced detail. Is your 9700 Pro struggling?

Don't bother... yes the 6600GT will be slightly faster in some games, but it may actually be slower in others... an x800 GTO modded to an X850XT on the other hand would be a major kick in the pants!

I second that, save 50bucks and play faster.

ANother one who says a 6600GT will not gain you much. Your better off with the 6800GS, or the X800 GTO.

that does point to the fact that the gt is quite a bit faster in most games. especially over the 9700pro.

ideally you should get a GTX512 ;)

but in the real world. any card with 12 pipes is likley to give better performance than the 6600GT

you can take your chance with a connect 3d GTO or a 6800 nu/gs
as you are on AGP then the x800 pro vivo is right up your street with it being modable.
also the 6800GT.

OMG did you read that review .. OMG the 6600GT Annihilates a 9800Pro and you guys are talking about a 9700pro here! LOL 6600GT according to Anandtech is a HUGE upgrade from a 9800Pro .. and a bigger one from a 9700 but a X800GTO would be allot better ... i got mine to 625Mhz Core 1100Mhz Memory and thats running 12Pipelines.

Hmm... but I do believe that the AGP version doesn't unlock as well.

BTW, I'd recommend saving up beyond a 6600GT and getting a cheap x800xt if you can find one (I believe Newegg has one for 275). If not, wait for the 6800GS AGP.

May be so for older games. But what I am saying is upgrading from 9700 pro to 6600GT is like upgrading from extremely slow framerates to slow framerates -- in other words you are upgrading from unplayable to barely playable. I'd probably try to step up to 6800GS in AGP.

Here is 6600GT at 1024x768 as a reference in newer games:

Call of Duty 2 - 1024x768 4AA/noAF - 24.2fps vs. 6800GT 41.2fps
Chronicles of Riddick - 1024x768 4AA/8AF - 23.5fps vs. 6800GT 49.5fps
Age of Empires 3 - 1024x768 noAA/noAF - 16fps vs. 6800GT 25fps
Fable - 1024x768 noAA/noAF - 21.2fps vs. 6800GT 37.2fps
Quake 4 - 1024x768 4AA/8AF - 39.5fps vs. 6800GT 55.7fps
Doom 3 - 1024x768 - 4AA/8AF - 40.2fps vs. 6800GT 73.2fps
Serious Sam 2 - 1024x768 - 18.3fps vs. 6800GT 38.1fps
FEAR - 1024x768 2AA/4AF - 26fps vs 6800GT 45fps

What I am saying is that upgrading to 6600GT wont even cut it for today's games so why waste $130 for 6600GT to not even get playable framerates at 1024x768 - what the OP wants.

But if you (OP) are only concerned with Quake 4 and Battlefield 2, then 6600GT will give you much better framerates than 9700Pro (esp in Quake 4). However, for all other games, 6600Gt is not worth the upgrade since it is seriously showing its age imo.

Thank you very much for your opinions. I think I wont upgrade after all...instead wait for x800 to come down and save some more money.

He's talking about his card, an X800GTO which comes with 12 pipes, with a chance to unlock 16. Quite a few people manage to hit mid 500 mhz on that gpu on stock cooling when the extra pipes are NOT unlocked, so I guess a wonderchip which hit 625 is within the realm of possible.
