Hi all,

A few questions for you.

If there were a smoking ban in all of the social establishments in your city, would you support it or oppose it?

If someone said that a great benefit of the ban was public health. Would you contradict it and for what reasons?

Thanks! :)

I would strongly oppose it. Please explain to me why smoking should be banned in a SMOKING LOUNGE, like what you'd find in the back of a cigar shop.

This OP is flamebait (-1) that is filled with loaded questions and was not contrived for the purpose of a fair discussion.

I'd go as far as to assert that trying to explain to the OP why I smoke hand made cigars imported from 1500 miles away would be like trying to explain to an 8 year old why I like fvcking hot chicks.

There already is a ban on smoking in social establishments in my state. I can't say I've ever been negatively affected by someone smoking in a restaurant... it's not a common sight around here (or wasn't before it was banned that is). It's common in bars, but I don't mind it in bars. Smoking and drinking go hand in hand.

I'd be amazed if it was a total ban. Establishments who get more than 60% of their revenue from tobacco sales are almost always exempted. In Philadelphia "local taverns" are exempted and in your great state of NJ, casinos are exempted for some "unknown" reason. A total ban, which the OP is suggesting, is the most stupid thing I've heard all day.

It's for a persuasive paper and since I don't smoke I can't come up with any decent reasons as to why we should allow smoking. That's why I came here.

Agreed.

I'll play along for a moment though. As a former smoker, I oppose any law like a smoking ban in private businesses.

You'll get a lot farther posting questions that aren't totally loaded, offensive and condescending towards smokers.

I'm sorry for offending you. If you would please provide me with some sound, unbiased questions and (hopefully) answers I would be glad to see them.

When I used to smoke, I liked to smoke anywhere I wanted without restraint. However, smoking in restaurants I deemed absolutely disgusting.

I don't see how these questions are flame bait, or loaded. Sounds like maybe someone has given you guys the cancer speech for the day and are bitter.

I can't write questions for writing a promt I haven't seen. If you came up with this topic yourself, I'd seriously consider choosing something else because you'd get an F for creativity in any writing class I've ever had.

They just passed this law in Houston. No smoking in restaurants or bars. The restaurants ban I agree with even if they have a bar in it. But not in strictly bars, people who go to bars like to smoke, there's no two ways about it. I hate people trying to force me to do what their perception of what's good for me on me. If that makes any sense. If you don't like to get second hand smoke, then for God's sake stay out of bars and clubs. If I don't mind then please leave me alone, I'm not hurting anyone other than myself and fellow smokers.

Look, can we just agree to disagree and you stop spreading all sorts of FUD in my thread?

FL has a smoking ban on bars/restaurants where food sales > 10% of total sales.

It's freaking sweet. No more going out to eat and coming home smelling like an ashtray.

If there were a ban I would strictly oppose it. If a ban was passed (and one recently was, the restaurant/bar owners are supremely ticked) I will not go out and spend my money on entertainment and eating out, and I like to party so it's significant.

Someone that says it's for public health needs to learn some facts.

Why do I smoke? I like it.

Here one for you: who owns the establishments in question?

You asked me to suggest questions you can ask, but I dont know what kind of information you are actually trying to gather from this thread! This has been beaten to death in the media and in every town hall, city councel and mayor's office in the country. It's been discussed on OT over and over and over. How can you not fully understand both sides of this argument by now? How am I spreading FUD? Do I look like Fox news or something?

If you just need to write a persuasive paper, I'd suggest trying to convince highschool kids to go to college or drivers to drive on the right side of the road. When you have an open ended presuasive prompt, presuade something that 80/20 in your favor and not 50/50.

So can I come to your house and tell you what you can and cannot do there?
