Here one for you: who owns the establishments in question?

Just assorted business owners. One guy was part of the city council but has was run off.

Google: constitutional property rights

Man there are a bunch of knee jerks in this thread.

Should the guy hold your hand and explain to you the purpose of his question before waiting for a response...

I would recommend going out and smoking to relax a little before you continue in this thread.

The fact that Ace "Ive had too much coffee today" McMac created a pardoy of this thread super fast and then can't seem to type insults fast enough, is a little telling.

That being said, as a smoker I would support the ban. Think of the logic..

Do I feel oppressed that I have to breath clean air, and have to go outside to smoke.

Do they feel oppressed that they have to breath smoke filled air that is potentially hazardous to their health.

When you compare the two, it is obvious why smoking bans are gaining support.

My opinion is that people should have as much liberty as is possible.
There shouldn't be a law against smoking in all public establishments.
Instead, the decision weather to allow or ban smoking should be up to the owner/operator of the facility.

If non-smokers do not want to be in a smoky atmosphere, they should not visit or work at a place that allows it.
If smokers want to be in a smoke filled atmosphere, they should find a place that lets them smoke.

Smoking is unhealthy, but it is still a personal decision if somebody wants to smoke.
This country needs less restrictions and more freedoms, not the other way around.

Your argument makes no logical sense whatsoever. The issue has nothing to do with the patrons. If you walk into an establishment and see that smoking is allowed, and you don't like that, then LEAVE. If you walk into an establishment and see that smoking is not allowed and you (for whatever reason) don't like that, then LEAVE. There is no oppression except for what the bans do to the property owners.

I am all for a smoking ban in every place EXCEPT in bars.

I am not talking about the restaurant bar area, i can support that.

but bars... bars... you know, the beer and shot joints. I am totally against smoking bans in bars.

And I can say... the locals around here lost big bucks when the smoking ban came into effect here.

Here, here! If I see a mud hole and want to step in it, then I should be able to. If I don't want to step in that mud hole then I can walk around it. It should be my decision not someone else's. Bars can just post a sign at the entrance that states if it is a smoking bar or not. All you need to do really.

I agree. I wouldn't eat in any restaurant that allowed smoking (ban or not). It's just dirty. But to ban smoking in BARS is just outrageous FFS. If the bar owner wants to go non-smoking on his own, that's fine by me. But a ban? :disgust:

Oh yeah, and to any socialist who wants to whine about the "injustice" of property rights: I'm coming over to eat your dinner at your house tonight.

You can't smoke anywhere here now, and since I quit last night I'm cool with that.

What are you gonna do though? Even if you have a problem with it, there's not much you can do. You light up outside and if it's winter you better invest in some of those mittens with the velcro finger-section so you can get your fingers on that dirty butt.

I'm an ex-smoker who hates the smell of smoke.

Smoking bans are a blatant violation of private property rights. I oppose any ban on private property.

Dude don't you think when people first light up it smells good though? I do.

From now on I'll just be a smoke smeller instead of an inhaler.

No. Only in the first year or so after I quit did smoke smell enticing. After that, it slowly became more and more disgusting to me. Now I can't stand it.

I do love the smell of a good pipe or cigar, though.

I'm going crazy over here. Smell of any smoke would absolutely make me go nuts right now. Quitting is tough, but it wouldn't make sense if it were easy would it?

So I'm cool with it.

i agree, as a smoker there it pisses me off that people cant control themselves and go without a smoke for a hour. its gross to walk into a place to eat and instead of getting a whiff of the kitchen you get a wiff of Newport. but based on that i would not and do not support any legislation telling private business how to operate.

I am not a smoker (except shisha in my own apartment) and I'd oppose it. Its an act against freedom. Business owners should have the right to decide whether they wish to allow or ban smoking in their private establishments. The customer also has the right to decide whether they wish to use the services of that establishment.
