turbo built in to a MSI 5182 mb using a k62-450 cpu?? Does the motion compensation hardware stuff work??

Or would I need a hardware decoder card?

Thanks!

Software decoding is pretty choppy, and with that rig
I would definitely get a hardware decoder.

The Rage Pro Turbo does assist in decoding DVDs, but it's a very old chipset which probably uses much less efficient decoding. Your system seems kind of on the borderline of whether you should get a hardware decoder or whether the Rage Pro Turbo will be enough.

If it's integerated, I'm also wondering if you have ATi's DVD player on one of your system discs (I have a feeling that other DVD players may not recognize and utilize the old Rage Pro chipset).

I do have a hardware decoder but I was wondering if I can get away without using it because I am donating it to my child's school.

Has anyone got to use software decoding sucessfully using a K62-450??

Thanks!

Yes. I've used a rage pro chip (Xpert98) with a K6-2-400 and it will do DVD playback with software decoders (PowerDVD).

Guys, I just built the box this evening and I found that it was plenty fast using Power DVD for software decoding. I guess the ATI motion compensation gadget works! I built the same setup using a Acorp socket 7 with a rendition s220 Diamond card with the same k62-450 cpu and I was getting about half the frame rates compared to the built-in ati turbo pro chipset - 8megs.

Thanks to all!
