So its coming down to this. I either buy an 8700K (Whole new system) to upgrade my 6700k and keep my GTX 1080ti or spend $100 more keep my current setup now minus the 1080ti and buy an RTX 2080ti. Would the RTX 2080ti bottleneck my i7 6700K? I plan on playing at 1080p until I upgrade to 1440p probably in the next 4 months. Just buying one component at the time.

Appreciate the input as always.
Cheers.

Yes, in some games @ 1080p, even a 9900k bottlenecks a 2080ti. See how close other cards are to the Ti in some 1080p games:

Then look how the Ti begins to take off at the higher resolutions. Its really a high res card. No CPU exists yet that is not a bottleneck at 1080p for this card.

Compared to the RX 5700 XT for that much performance I'd rather just keep my GTX 1080ti. What exactly are bottleneck symptoms? and yes its for 1080p 144hz until I can upgrade to 1440p in about 4 months (If I bought the 2080ti)

And yeah not big performance difference between 2080ti and 1080ti at 1080p. Interesting.

You should really decide this before making any purchasing decisions at this time.
I am doing the upgrade for sure. I think in the next 5 months regardless. Trying to step up my PC set up. I loved going from 720p to 1080p so I am sure 1440p is gonna be just as good. It just won't happen now. I can do 1 thing by the end of the year. Build a new PC with 8700k and 16GB RAM or or keep what I have and get an RTX 2080ti.

Based on the links Amenx shared there is really no point on upgrading from a 1080ti to 2080ti just for 1080p. Will see how it goes with money. Appreciate everyone's input on my thread so far.

Thanks

Whether 1440p is 'worth it's depends a lot on your preferred monitor size and how much workspace you have available.

For me, dual 27" / 1440p monitors is a sweet spot for my setup. I run native resolution on both monitors for productivity as well as when gaming on my 144Hz monitor.

I considered making the jump to a larger 4k monitor(s), but a 32"+ display in my workspace seems physically unwieldy and too small to run at native 4k on the desktop.

Regardless, the incremental upgrades are a great way to go since you get to see how each component improves your setup.

Absolutely there will be SOME games that are limited by it, but thats most RTS games anyway which arent graphically demanding to begin with.

It seems like the logical choice would be to upgrade the monitor 1st.
This is it. The monitor is where the eye candy goes, that’s where most of your money should be spent. Once that’s maxed out THEN worry about the components to drive it.

My 2070 felt overkill for 1080p with my 8700 non k . Well BF5 with RT on kind of made it feel slow. Yeah if you enable RT in something like BF5 you could justify a 2080ti for 1080p.

You must really want RT enabled with a 60+ frame rate to justify the purchase.

6700K + 2080Ti will have superior performance over 8700K + 1080Ti in the vast majority of cases.
This.... The monitor, the 2080ti, then the rest of the system. In that order. 6700K is still very, very fast in use cases that need no more than four cores.

To be honest, I wouldn't even consider upgrading to a six core from a 6700K at this point in time, it would be eight core or higher.

Thank you everyone for your replies and opinions. Much appreciate it.

What I was thinking exactly! was just worried about severe bottleneck symptoms until I can upgrade the Monitor.

Fair enough. Thank you!

I wouldn't bother upgrading at all. Maybe a better monitor for sure but I'd wait for the next batch of nvidia cards before replacing that 1080ti.

Fair enough also a good point. I haven't made up my mind yet what I'll do but this makes sense as well. Any estimate when new Nvidia cards will come out? I heard rumors of fall 2020

The 1080ti is still one of the best cards out right now anyway. Plenty of power for 1080p 144hz

Yeah the GTX 1080ti is awesome. I usually upgrade my video cards each new cycle but I skipped the 2080ti because my 1080ti does it all well. I do run a 4k screen and for the most part I have no issues. I do have to tweak some graphic settings on some games but all in all I'm quite happy with it. I do think i will get the next TI card that releases though.

Ahhh that's great to hear! really comforting for me since I never used or owned one till a few days ago. I have the tendency that whenever I buy a used GPU I make sure it has warranty left on it and I open an RMA ticket telling them some story how I get artifacts or low performance with the sole purpose of them checking out my GPU to make sure everything is okay and the warranty is not void. Why tho? because I bought a GTX 1070 FTW2 from eBay a while back, it worked great but the guy damaged it (You could tell by the look of it he took it apart) when he tried installing an aftermarket cooler and EVGA said the warranty was void because of this. So as precaution I always send them for RMA as soon as I get them.

All that been said EVGA just cleared my GTX 1080ti and is coming back on Monday, so I am a very happy camper. Can't wait to start using it and gaming on it. Super happy with it. Hehe. Such a good feeling man!

Side Note: EVGA is so cheap. I paid $20 for shipping with $450 insurance+Tracking for priority mail with USPS and It got there in 2.5 days (east coast to California). But EVGA is so cheap they sent it out this past Monday and it won't arrive until next Monday haha. Cheap as hell! but hey! no big deal I guess.

I like evga myself. I own three GTX cards by EVGA (980, 1080, 1080ti) and I have not had any issues with them. Yeah if you are gaming at 1080p then that 1080ti will handle anything you throw at it. Hell it handles just about every game I throw at it at 4k.

I agree. Easy decision to keep my 1080ti for another year or 2 and skip this generation.

Here's hoping Navi 23 helps bring next gen prices down next year. Fingers crossed.

I agree with the other comments about spending money on monitor next.

It's just an off time to buy in general. We haven't really increased per core performance enough to matter since skylake's release, just added more cores. Turing has been out over a year now. We have new consoles coming out next year. I'm just holding on until this passes. What I would do though is get a nice monitor, then start looking at the other parts of my system that are external. I've got more mileage or satisfaction out of upgrading my monitor/keyboard/mouse/HEADPHONES/speakers/CHAIR/etc over the last 5+ years (probably closer to 10) than I have from upgrading internal parts. I could use a nice 2tb+ ssd though.
