Alright, I want to play h264 encoded 1080p video and you can play it on a X2 4200+.

Would overclocking a 90nm 3500+ obtain the power of a X2 4200+? (The video is playing on one core only on the X2 4200+)

Thanks

Yeah, you should be able to hit 2.6GHz+ fairly easily with a good Venice 3500+.

So you think it would play?

I forgot to mention this but the stuff I want to play is real hardcore h264. :)
It uses MBAFF interlacing and like I said it plays on a X2 4200+ with CoreAVC.

I can't overclock it now (don't have the computer) but I'll try it.

Edit: And I'd like to do it with stock HSF.

Thanks

Let me guess: BBC Planet Earth shows?

Good luck playing it. I can play it choppily on my laptop, a 2.13ghz Celeron M, but I can't come close to playing it to my satisification on my 2500 @ 2.3ghz Athlon XP chip.

Your best bet is to get a video card which allows some acceleration, like a 7800 or something of that nature. Many people are able to use the PowerDVD hardware acceleration to offload some of the decoding onto their video cards.

Other than a video card which can assist, nothing but brute force will allow you to play the files. I'm suprised that you can't play in relatively smoothly on your 3500 though. Are you sure that you have CoreAVC working with your media player? My 2500 will play it around 20 - 22 FPS, so it seems odd that you can't get at least 25 FPS or so.

It's definately worth a shot. I think it would be fine running at 2.4GHz or higher.

Oh yeah. I can feel your pain about the 6800GT. I really hope that somehow the next version of CoreAVC will somehow be able to offload some of the processing to my 6800GT. Otherwise my HT box has become completely obsolete. I can't believe that the 6600 can accelerate the video yet the 6800GT can not.

What player are you using? Some decoders do better than others without GPU hardware assist. I can't get a 256kb Sempr0n to do it smoothly with any player so far. The PureVideo HD article states they don't think any single core can do it without dropping frames either.

BTW, On my 2.6ghz X2 with no harwdare assist using VLC, CPU usage can spike to 70%.

Yeah, it's Planet Earth, among other BBC HD content.

It plays ok, I don't know the FPS (How can I tell?) but it's not watch able.

I'm using MPC with CoreAVC Pro, the newest version.

I'll try overclocking it when I have access to the computer next week.

It already should easily, especially with CoreAVC. My SD3700+ did. (Yes, I am talking 1080p H.264) In fact, it was "mostly" watchable with FFDShow even. But CoreAVC was perfect.

ugh. interlacing.
