Would o/cing a CPU make games quite a bit faster?

Or just faster on loading and while the game is running? I got a non o/ced 3000+ 64,1gb memory,DFI Ultra-D and a BFG 6600GT OC.

Depends on what you're overclocking, how much you overclock it, and what game you're playing. But in general, overclocking can produce a noticeable difference in performance. Is it quite a bit faster? Depends on what you consider "quite a bit."

Overclocking the CPU will improve performance the most in games that are being limited by the CPU... Quake 3 for example. You'll get some performance in games like Far Cry or HL2, but not as much as if you overclocked the video card.

Load times have more to do with HD speed and amount of RAM. Depending on the situation, cpu speed can affect load times. CPU speed is more noticeable while the game is running.

As for noticing a difference, you probably won't "notice" too much of a difference when going from (your 3000+, 1.8ghz I assume) 1.8 to 2.0. If you can overclock to around 2.3 or higher, then you will notice a difference while the game is running. (ie. 3d frame rates will be higher)

Edit: Fix the quoting...

I wouldn't call a 600mhz OC off of a 3000+ extreme by any means...according to the polls that is below average to only get 2.4ghz...the average was actually 2.5ghz...

And what gains would you see from that? Honestly, my 3200+ at 2.7 seems no faster than 2.8C when playing UT2K4. Maybe in newer games there is a difference but I dont see it.

Check the thread Duvie linked to... and look at my results for HL2. That 24% increase in performance is the difference between frame rates dropping into the red sometimes (a difference easily felt) and the frame rates never dropping into the red.

Similarly... that 24% can mean the difference between being able to have vsync on and maintain your refresh rate, or not being able to maintain the refresh rate and having your frame rates halved because vsync doesn't seem to work in HL2 on 6800's.

*EDIT* Doom 3 is another one... AFAIK, the shadows in Doom 3 are done by the CPU... and we all know how many shadows there are in Doom 3... and while the increase isn't as great as in that HL2 benchmark, it does make a difference. And now, my overclock is at 2475 MHz with my RAM at 225 2-3-3-10 and I get 104 FPS average. 104 vs. ~90 before the overclock is the difference between my frame rates occasionally dropping below the game's cap of 60, and NEVER dropping below 60. It's a noticeable difference when you're fighting a group of baddies and have spheres of light flying past you and muzzle flares and you're being hit, making the view rotate around and up and down.

OK. That seems reasonable. I guess I have to start playing newer games.

Despite HL2 being pretty shader intense, it scales pretty well with CPU speed. Especially in the areas without water since water seems to be the biggest shader hog.
