Would now be a good time to start deporting illegals?

I would think that cracking down on this would be great for the job situation. In the short term, the government would need to hire additional agents to investigate and enforce the laws. Then as the jobs that the illegals were working freed up, Americans who are out of work could fill those jobs.

Please tell me where my thinking is flawed.

We should be rounding their asses up every day and shipping them back to wherever it is they came from.

The thinking is that neither of those jobs are going to pay a living wage, it would significantly hike the prices for goods illegal immigrant workers manufacture/work on/whatever which would lead to a productivity decline, terrible for economies, and it would be xenophobic, protectionist hysteria the likes of which countries seem to see every economic downturn. (check out your history to see just how many places responded to "wut? Economic downturn? Kick out the Imm'grunts!")

We're not talking about immigrants. We are talking about illegals. A big difference you should be able to understand.

Is there a bad time to start deporting illegal immigrants?

The government should be enforcing all immigration laws, at all times.

For the most part I think a bunch of 'em are leaving on their own - so much so that some states are asking to expand guest-worker programs ...

All I keep hearing is how tough it is for them now that the construction industry is DOA and that they're leaving in droves.

So the problem may work a lot of itself out, we just need to let the economy continue to tank.

If one were of the tinfoil hat persuasion, you could connect the dots and say that the R's voted against the stimulus to keep the economony in freefall, with the side benefit being a backdoor way to push the illegals out, without getting Blackwater involved.

But even I'm not that much of a hack.

Problem with that is they just come back. Every day i drive by a spot in town that is known for illegals. They stand on the side of the street waiting for work. The cops know it and the public knows it. What do they do about it? Not a darn thing because the cops know they will just be back the next day and the next day.

The sad thing is those same guys standing on that corner asking for work will work their asses off for a day shoveling/hammering/doing whatever you ask and thank you at the end for $20 that they will take home to their wife and kids and not spend on alchohol. Whereas the American with a sign on the corner asking for a handout who reeks of booze will scoff at the change you give him. Makes me wonder who I really want in this country.

You go first.

It's kind of like those old WB cartoons, when the protagonist plugs a leaking dam with their pinky finger.

Yes, illegal immigrants, exactly as I said in the very first sentence of my post. My point stands either way, people are looking for a negative reference group to take out their economic fears on. Immigrants, legal, illegal, etc. have frequently fulfilled this role, as is being displayed here.

I wish it were that easy. What about those illegals who have given birth to what are now 100% legal American citizens? You want to ship them home and leave their American kids....where?

Then you need to address the fact that most will just come back anyways.

They're leaving on their own. No work.

Now is the time to mandate the use of eVerify to confirm work eligibility.

Now is a good time to give them a 60 day warning after which they are rounded up and put in work camps. Think of all that labor, it would help in the recession, and it's not like they'd be slaves; they get to stay then, legally, in the US and work, which is what they wanted to do to begin with. Everyone wins.

Yes, if anything, one of the best immediate solutions would be to severely crack down on the hiring of illegals rather than kicking them out or stopping them from coming in. At least, that would be a good start for now. Why spend such a ridiculous amount of money and time trying to find them and get rid of them when we can do things that convince most of them to leave on their own accord?

What about their American kids?

Illegals don't compete with me but I understand the resentment and supply and demand curves. Bottom line though, it's immoral to kick them out at this point since they are Americans too so it's not going to happen. Best thing to do is some of the ID checks I've heard touted and prosecuting those employers who violate terms. We can't take the world but 10 million or so is no big deal.

The failings of this country and it's economy run so much deeper than "dey took our jerbs", it's actually fucking hilarious. Keep it up!

So what are you are suggesting? We start to plant trees, recycle, give to the poor, use less polluting energy and in general clean up? Or the big gay pile?

I don't think anyone blamed them for the economy. I simply stated that this would be a possible way of improving the job market.

Make them citizens. Give them a chance at their ONE life on this planet to support their families with reasonable (relative) wages. Seriously, I can't stand selfish Americans crying about this. Talk about a sense of entitlement. The only thing most of you did to deserve such a charmed life was be BORN here. Congrats!

Now would be the worst time to deport them or make them citizens. The only way deporting them would work is to get rid of minimum wage and let people work for whatever they would work for. Otherwise if we legalize them we will have many places that are forced to go out of business and get rid of the higher paying jobs that everyone on this board wants.
