A friend asked me to build him a computer and I would like some help. He's not heavily into gaming but has some video program that taxes his graphics now. Below is what I have picked out but I think I need to change the video card and I don't know which ram to use. All help will be appreciated. TIA.😀

DFI LP UT NF590 SLI-M2R/G Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 590 SLI MCP ATX AMD Motherboard -
$197

Opteron UP 148 2.2GHz $37

Thermalright SI-97A $29

eVGA 512-P2-N637-AR GeForce 7950GT 512MB GDDR3 PCI Express x16 KO Superclocked Video Card
$293

CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1000 (PC2 8000) Dual Channel $150
OR
mushkin eXtreme Performance 1GB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) $147

Western Digital Raptor WD740ADFD 74GB Serial ATA 10,000RPM Hard Drive w/16MB Buffer
$152

Antec Neo HE 550w Power Supply $69.99

1. Get the dual channel Ram.
2. Completely unecessary to spend that much on a motherboard. Take about 80 bucks off of that and put it back into the processor.
3. Video card will work just fine.

I was thinking about that ram. What would you suggest for a processor?

I just bought the opteron so I will need to find a knew mobo and different ram. I'm just a little confused, maybe see clearer in the morning.

I'd go Intel C2D, E6600 considering the budget. 965P based board (Asus P5B maybe).

I'd find out exactly what app he has that taxes the video card. It's possible he could make better use of a Quadro or FireGL card, rather than one designed for gaming.

Found a great deal on a opteron $36 which I couldn't refuse so this is what I have so far, still nead ram. Thought since I saved so much on the cpu that I will go with 2GB (1gb X 2).

Opteron UP 148 2.2GHz, 1MB L2 Cache, 1GHz FSB, Socket
939, $37

The programs he uses are a CT and Xray viewer and Vox Blast.
The deal on the Opteron UP 148 fell through so I am looking for a cpu, would still like to get a dual core opteron if I can find a good deal. I think I wil get the same mobo as I have,DFI LanParty NF4 Ultra-D
