We all talk about how the US has an insanely high incarcerated population compared to other countries and stuff.

So what if we used our prison population to do labor camp stuff?

i.e.
1) Build autoturreted wall with Mexico
2) Improve our damn roads!

etc etc?

People always talk about how we spend so much on prisons and in CA we spend more on corrections than K-12 education and what not... So why not put that prison money to good use? We have terribad roads in CA. Let's repave them. Or build new roads. Shrug.

I think USA should follow Malaysia's and Singapore's justice system and have judges hand out caning sentences alongside a prison terms. Google "Malaysian caning video" to see what I mean. That is one hell of a deterrent.

Most certainly.
Prisoners should have to earn their room and board.
Right now they leech off of the society that they violated.

What really pisses me off is the luxuries prisoners get like TV.

We should also have workfare instead of welfare.

I agree, totally.

The only down side I see to prison labor is that the opportunity for corruption and the financial incentive for those institutions to bias toward maintaining larger populations/workforces, potentially at the expense of justice.

Two birds with one stone!

Export all illegal immigrants, and then have prisoners do the jobs they currently do.

If years of anal rape doesn't deter people from being criminals nothing will.

The caning sentences would be administered alongside a prison sentence, sometimes one caning session for every year of a prison term. So anal rape on a caned buttocks would be a pretty fearsome deterrent.

It's kind of begging for corruption. That, and they really need to decide if they're dishing out retribution or rehabilitation.

I'm all for hard labour for violent crime, myself.

It's not rehabilitation. sitting in a cell getting 3 meals a day is not rehab. The way prisons are run now all thye do is breed tougher criminals.
It needs to be a deterent. Thus hard labor.
Though I can see the point that if we use it as a means of labor for financial gain, ect that there is to much opportunity for abuse. Kick backs for judges to impose maximum sentances, ect.

I think prison should involve several kicks to the groin by a large man wearing Klingon boots.
If you get "life" or a death setance, you get your 1 appeal, but it must be done in 60 days. After that, line em up and use them as live fire targets for the military.

Plus, some of the hardcore criminals that go to prison end up being anal rapists instead of getting raped. That deterrent does not apply to them. Caning is applied equally across the board and therefore deters everyone.
