Would it make sense to upgrade from a 7900GT to an 8800GTX?

My 7900GT struggles a bit with really high resolutions so I usually keep it at 1280 by 1024. It appears that the 8800GTX has lived up to its hype. I wouldn't get this card just yet, I want to see what ATI has to offer. All the benchmarks that I've seen of this card have been at ridiculus resolutions. How do you think it would benefit in lower resolutions? Thanks.

if its really bothering you and u have the green$, upgrade. Im happy with my oc'ed 7800gt, it can run css & bf2142 perfect so for me..theres no reason to upgrade. But then again...I play at 1280x960, My card would struggle as well with very high resolutions, but I dont see too much image quality improvment at 1600x1200 if aa is on.

Yeah, my 7800GT is beginning to struggle a bit at the higher resolutions, but I'm contemplating on whether or not I should shell out the cash for an 8 series.

I have a 7900GT and it's starting to show it's age at 1920x1080.

The gts is in my future.

I dont think an upgrade is what you need at the moment. Yes we ALL want one. But there is no real game out yet that needs it. And a high resolution is only good to show off to friends. Does it really serve any pupose? But that is not going to stop me from upgrading to the 8800GTS in about a month. So if you really need it, then i would have to say go for it, if you want to get it just to get it, it is pointless. My advice is to get an 7950GT, it is all a person needs right now.

I don't think I'm going to upgrade any time soon, next Feburary at the earliest when I have the money and when prices go down.

You're talking about over 100% improvement in performance in higher resolution by upgrading from 7900 gt to 8800 gtx

the extra framerates that you gained allows you to turn on higher levels of aa and af

so the talk of not needing the extra power is obsolete

I have a 450watt power supply with only 1 pci-express power connector. Will I be able to connect two molex power connectors to make the second plug into the card?

It makes sense to upgrade from a performance standpoint. The question is do you want to pay that premium price now or wait a bit till prices come down some? To me that would be your most challenging question.

When did the prices of the 7800GTX start falling after last year's G70 release? That should give us some idea as to when we should start seeing some price drops.

I think it dropped very slowly over time, but once the G71s came out, the prices went down on the 7800GTX.

lol, I don't see much of a diffrence between 4x and 8x aa at high resolutions. I might start gaming on my tv more often which could do 1920 by 1080.

Like Sntry2 said, not if you crank up all the details.

Mainly, though, it depends on what res you play at. If you're gonna max out your monitor at 16x12, then no, it won't bottleneck (Guru3d showed a 3.5ghz C2D performing the same as a 1.8ghz C2D at 16x12). However, at 1280x1024, your chip would hold the card back a little. Not enough to warrant skipping the upgrade though.

Wait for the price to drop and for newer games that *really* struggle on your 7900GT. (I have a 7900GT and am doing the same thing)

I bought a 7900 gt to play oblivion back in may. Shortly after, I upgraded from my 1024x768 CRT to a 1600x1200 LCD. My 7900 gt is not fast enough to play oblivion satisfactorily at the higher resolution. So I will probably be upgrading.

Of course it makes sense to upgrade. A 8800gtx is about 3-4 times as fast as a 7900gt.
