Would it be possible to invade the US?

I was playing an invasion level in Rome Total war and I realized, it would be impossible to invade the US.

We can match any tank vs tank/ plane vs plane so it would come down to their soldiers vs us. And now that we all can buy automatic firearms I don't think the invaders would stand a chance against 300 million people exercising their second amendment rights.

*fires gun in air*

What do you think?


Edit: And I mean successfully invaded, not just occupy for a month or two.

we can't all buy automatic firearms. you have to pass so many background checks that is is ridiculously expensive to boot.
 
Well, there is a difference btwn 'invasion' and 'conquered.' You mean conquered? Invaded, yes, conquered, yes, if nuclear weapons and/or other WMD's were involved.
 
Invaded by whom? ICBMs/SLBMs could be launched against the US with success. There would be swift retaliation but the US couldn't stop the incoming. Other than that, a government's army wouldn't have much success in a traditional military invasion.

WTF, we can't buy automatic firearms. Where did you get that crazy notion? There are only a few states that allow you to purchase fully automatic weapons and they are heavily restricted by the licensing and registration procedures.

the US is #3 in population. we aren't even close to india/china, but how could india/china transport any significant number of thier billions to our land? how could they transport them without our our Navy (by FAR #1 Navy in the world) destroying the invaders?

An invasion would certainly be possible... Conquer, that's another story.

Sure it's possible.

It would be very hard to control the population spread over such a large landmass.
Also the local militias that would form would be very formidable.

Conquered would be asking too much for the invaders. I'll give them credit if they can hold California for over a year.

Edit-Do you realize that California has the 5th or 6th largest economy in the entire world?
 
depending on how it was done, yes. Weren't we already invaded once, remember 9/11, that would count as a invasion or an infiltration.....
 
Could we be invaded? Yes, of course, but the invading party wouldn't last very long. The attack would have to be done and over with quickly, because once it happened, getting reinforcements in would be nearly impossible.

By defination of the word... of course.

now what would happen AFTER the invasion is a totally diferent story. Perhaps when you use the word invaded/invasion you are aso including OCCUPATION, too. That is a different story.

But we have open, pourous borders... we have vast open air space. Of course we can be invaded. But, the American ppl in general... have the most to lose, therefore their heart will have the biggest fight... occupation is a totally different animal.
