would it be difficult for an idiiot such as me to put up a messageboard on a website?

I would like a forum that allows for private messages and user profiles with usability similiar to this Fuse Talk board...but since I don't know a thing about cold fusion and I don't have a gob of money to blow I will look for something else.

i would prefer not to use one of those board that you link to (e.g., ezboards).

ibb should be included in your cpanel, if you have it.

or if you have fantastico, its even more loaded w/ boards.

What site is this anyway?

Fantastico!

But manual installs are still pretty easy, as the documentation is quite thorough, and most major forum software has good support forums.

I did it with free software from Snitz forums. Had it working in an hour and I had no idea what I was doing when I got started. I'm sure other packages are similar.

It can be daunting if you've never installed a PHP script but after you do it a few times, it becomes VERY easy.

Check your email, I just sent you something.

A few people PM'd me asking "What's Fantastico and where can I get it???"

Fantastico is an auto installer which works with cPanel control panel.

With Fantastico a n00b can install forums like this or coppermine pichosting with 3 clicks of your mouse in about 10 seconds. Seriously it's that easy.

There are several AT members who can offer free or cheap web hosting WITH FANTASTICO such as:
RossMAN, minendo, nourdmrolNMT1, dartworth, DeviousTrap, and about 20 others.

If you want your own web hosting account with Fantastico I would suggest UltraUnix.NET which has a few dozen AT'ers as customers :)

Ok I kinda have an idea about what Fantasico does/will do. But I need to decide on which cPanel type forum to install, right...or wrong?

Thanks for the email Rossman. I finally figured out that you were showing me how easy it is to install. I thought I was d/l'ing a board...oops.

Ok so you received the e-mail, good.

Please tell the others reading this thread how easy it was, can you link to the forum (sellsold.com/directory) you created?

Yes this (Fantasico) was very easy to install but I must admit I am not quite sure what it does. Does it just make installing the forum much easier?

Here is the Invisionboard which was installed with Fantasico. Did I explain that correctly Rossman?

All Fantastico does is makes installation A LOT easier by eliminating these steps:

1) You don't have to download the software to your hard drive.
2) You don't have to unzip the files.
3) You don't have to upload the unzipped files from your hard drive to the web server via FTP.
3) You don't have to create a MySQL database.
4) You don't have to CHMOD any files or folders.
5) You don't have to run the install/configure script.

By using Fantastico you avoid all those steps.

Now the forum is installed and ready to use.

Please read my posts here.

You choose between phpBB and InvisionBoard, it's VERY EASY to install either one.

Right off the top of your head (or anyones'), does one board have a feature or a disadvantage that would make you choose one board (phpBB or Invisionboard) over the other?

Also, are most web hosts capable of handling these boards? I must admit that UltraUnix.NET had reasonable pricing, albeit more space and transfer bandwidth than I would need.

It's basically personal preference. I think InvisionBoard looks better and has better administrative functions. You can try the admin fuctions, go here, at the top click Admin CP, username is TEST and the password you chose in Fantastico. phpBB is also popular. Why not try both and see which you like more?

As long as your web host offers:
1) Control panel (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Plesk, Ensim) with MySQL.
2) MySQL and PHP

Then it shouldn't be a problem to install your own forums.

If you want something cheaper, I'd take a look at HostPC.com for $15.98/yr ... however they don't offer Fantastico. I have installed InvisionBoard on HostPC's servers and it takes about 9 minutes.

I would give each board a try but, let's say, that I start with phpBB on my site then at a later date switch to InvisionBoard can I easily transfer the threads between boards?

But the web host has to offer Fantasico too, right?

I don't think that I would like to tackle that right now...I have no idea how to:

1) create a MySQL database.
2) You don't have to CHMOD any files or folders.

Do either of those boards offer the feature to add a poll to a thread?

Lastly, for now :) , would it take much programming to add pictures, in the same manner as ads are on this board, to the forum pages of InvisionBoard?
