Would it be bad to change 1 molex to 6-pin?

My little PSU has four plugs, 2x SATA (in use) 1x floppy and 1x molex. A fancier video card needs a 6-pin plug.

I've seen adapters of 2 molex to 6-pin... what about just ONE molex to 6-pin? I once powered a GeForce 9600GT by splitting the one molex to two, then plugging the two molexes into the 6-pin adapter.

Any harm in splitting/joining or just using a single molex? Should I do a floppy-to-molex change then use those two?

You thoughts, please. No - getting a new PSU for this proprietary box is not an option. Yes, it has enough juice. 🙂

there are one molex to 6 pin adapters.


your only real concern is if the rail that the molexes that are connected to the 6 pin adapter is the same.



for example, if you have a 2 molex to 1 6 pin adapter, but you connect 2 4 pin molexes that are on the same power supply rail to get the 6 pin, that really makes no difference as far as getting more current to the 6 pin port.

so if you have a 1 molex to 6 pin adapter, it should be fine as long as the rail you plug your adapter into can supply the card.
