Would it be a waste to sell my 5850?

I bought it two months ago. At the time the 470 was hotter, louder and the same speed for $40 more so the generally recommendation by everyone I talked to was get the 5850. I was pretty leary of atis drivers since I had a 9800pro prior and hated them. However, I only paid $270 for my 5850 and it came with a decent game so it seemed like a good deal at the time.

Now the 470 is faster. I find the video playback on my 5850 to be subpar to nvidias. That plus the 470s 120+ fps in starcraft which allows for 70+with AA and my 5850s 90fps in starcraft with no AA option makes me want to switch. This all plus the fact that Nvidias drivers seem better, they seem more committed to the gaming community by adding special features.

Finally I keep my cards for two years and it feels as if the 470 would be a better bet.
My only issue is selling this 5850 and then buying a 470 would probably cost me. So I would lose money in the long run. Not sure if it is worth it, but feeling pretty dissatisfied with my 5850.

Thoughts?

Go ahead. Whatever makes you happy is important. Don't hesitate.

At one time, NV products were superior to ATI's.
Later, ATI's products were superior to NV's.
Then once again, NV's products were superior to ATI's.
Suddenly...

Well, you get the idea. At the moment NV has the most appealing bang for the buck products. Not something you could have said for 10 months previous. You needed hardware during those 10 months so you bought the obvious choice -- ATI. Now, in the present, if you want to sidegrade because you see value in that -- by all means, sidegrade. I wouldn't.

The 470 was always faster, so I'm not sure what your talking about.

If you think your drivers suck and the card is slow than you should defiantly get the 470, but from the reasons you mentioned they aren't really compelling reasons to sidegrade.

If I were you I wouldn't switch card because you think you might have problems in the future.

If you do sell it, I'll give you $201 😀

From a 5850 I wouldn't change it right now. Wait until the GTX475 or whatever it is called comes out...that would likely be a better buy IMO.

Why have you made about 10 threads in the past month all another iteration of some sort of NV vs ATI, 5850 vs 470, bad ATI drivers and so on.

At this point you still can't make up your mind for yourself ?

Decide for yourself if you think it's worth it. You won't see the difference between 90 or 120 fps anyways.

The 5850 and 470 are so similar you won't notice a difference, unless all you want to play is Metro 2033.

Yes nvidia has AA in Starcraft 2, but the brute force implementation is buggy and there are visual errors in cut scenes due to enabling it. And the cut scenes are the only place you notice the AA. You can't even tell in actual gameplay for the most part.

Three people are "a lot" in your small world!
I guess you haven't learned anything from that failed 3D gaming statistics pwnage. Oh wait, you are... sorry, nvm

Depends what you get for the 5850 and how much the 470 will cost you.
If you get a killer deal on a 470 for like $200 or can sell your 5850 for $250+ then why not?
Otherwise I don't really see the value except potentially in the video playback.
I think this is probably more a calibration issue though.

Should you do it? It's your money. The fact that you are asking means you want to but need other people to tell you it's okay. Be a man.

Is it worth it? Hell no. Unless you break even or better.

wow, you guys seem pretty negative on this whole "sidegrade" thing. what if the op has a small fusion generator in the basement? certainly that could handle the additional power requirements of the 470, right? maybe?

Might wanna mention, one of those "a lot" of people wanting to sidegrade quoted by Wreckage is.. the OP!

I am starting to think Wreckage has a degree in... yellow journalism? 😀

OP do you value quietness? How sensitive are you to noise? If you think you tend to like quieter computing environment, then I say don't do it.

-5850s in most cases can be easily OC'd beyond 5870 speed nearly silent at a reasonable cost (s1 rev2 should probably fit, TT Pro definitely does fit). Even without third party coolers it is quieter (compared to gtx 470) when overclocked

- 470 may not be THAT loud next to a 480, but it is damn loud compared to a 5850 when both are overclocked (nevermind that you will need to spend more on custom cooling if that's your thing). I was expecting something a bit quieter personally, there is a reason why there has been so much rant over fermis' loudness. At idle, they are quiet. When you are gaming though... Please don't even try to bring up 4xxxx stock coolers - we all know those are loud - they can be easily dealt with. S1 rev is cheap, what's stopping you?

-If you must have an nv card and have quietness then it is gtx 460 that you want, not 470. Of course it wouldn't exactly be an upgrade from a 5850 performance wise then.

-470 is faster by a fair margin, but you may or may not need that boost depending on what games/res you play. It all depends on your priorities, and I am just giving you my perspective on the noise front. I can say this with confidence now since I actually played around with my own gtx 470. Let's see if EVGA's high flow bracket + TIM reapplication can help keeping temperature in check (and thus allow me lower fan speed)

Wait for a newer card. Aren't they supposed to realease a fully unlocked GF104??? The only Nvidia card i find attractive right now is the GTX460 for the very known reasons. If they launch something like a GTX485 that consumes less and operates at lower temps while performing better then i'll switch back to Nvidia. Meantime my 5870 rules and i wouldn't waist my time sidegrading to gain 20-40fps when my card is already pushing out 90fps.

Well here is my honest opinion.

Wait, the 475 will be out soon and be a better option or at least it should be, will also effect prices for the better i think.

I was considering a sidegrade as well, 4890 to 460, but because of coil whine not performance or any other issues.

I have decided to wait till the 6000 series hits cause thats going to drive Nvidia prices down because i think like last time they are going to be 6 months+ behind with the next gen cards and will have to drop prices to compete, then i will pull the trigger on a 460 or 475.
