Would it be a waste of time to start taking a multivitamin?

It would be a waste of moneyfor at least two reasons:

1) You buy POS vitamins
2) You're so unhealthy that your body will be unable to properly absorb them.

Yes, but it should still be a supplement. The main factor is what you eat.

And the stuff available at the supermarket usually is a total waste of money. If you're not getting enough of stuff like Vitamin C, then you have a terrible diet and no amount of supplementation will fix that.

It can't hurt. Even if you're pissing 90% of them away, the other 10% is something your body wouldn't have had.

Waste of time?
Exactly how freaking long does it take to go down your throat man?

Now, waste of money is another question. But I see that issue is being dealt with already.
I just use the One A Day Mens. It seems to help me provided I eat well and excercise too.
But if thats the case then vitamins are number three on my list. After diet and activity.

I dont have experience with no-name brands.

I didn't mean waste of time in the literal sense. I was thinking about getting Centrum or One-A-Day, but I assume there are some less "popular" ones like the one Legend mentioned that are better. I don't know though... they're clearly more expensive too.

If stuff like Centrum helps you, then that should be a huge warning flag: You're not getting the most basic of nutrients found in any half decent food.

People need to understand that Vitamins are the most basic, essential nutrients needed to survive the short term. There's so many other nutrients out there. Stuff we don't even understand, like Kiwi's strong antioxidant effects are yet to be understood.

The types of fats, and carbs, and protein you eat are immensely important as well.

Nikamichi seems to disagree.

I may have misworded my post, because that was not my intention. Multivitamins are a good thing, as long as your body is able to absorb it. Otherwise, it is a waste of money, not "time".

A study showed that schoolchildren who took vitamins had higher IQs... No matter how well you eat, chances are you aren't getting 100% of your RDA of something. Even most fruits actually have very small amounts of most vitamins. You act like no matter what you eat you'll get all of everything. Even someone eating a "balanced diet" can benefit from more of some vitamins. Fact is vitamins can't do any harm... it's not like they destroy those magical other things you think exist in food.

All of the minerals are in forms that your body can easily absord. It contains many nutrients that people don't get each day. It doesn't give you massive amounts of single vitamins, but broad range of healthy dosages.
Whoa, I just realized they recommend taking 6 a day. That's definitely more expensive... nearly 900 dollars a year if I were to take it consistently.

I wouldn't take stuff like that. 6 pills is ridiculous... and megadoses of vitamins can be harmful. For a while last summer I took GNC Mega Men, and I think it made my neck hurt.

They're not megadoses. You take 6 pills max because they're ~80 ingredients, and for swallowing/package considerations, they're small. They actually contain less of many minerals than typical vitamins do. They're loaded with very high quality minerals, powerful antioxidants not found in typical vitamins, and herbs.

I've been taking them for a year, and I haven't had the slightest sign of illness, headache, etc.

For how much they cost, they're definitely worth it. A $10 bottle of Centrum from Costco lasts me like 4-6 months.
