would I like ME2?

I'm a traditional j-RPG fan, but lately I've gotten into action RPG's (since that's all they seem to be making for consoles outside of gameboy games). loved the Fable series (even the third one, at least gameplay-wise) and I'm enjoying the action-y feeling of Dragon Age 2 on my 360 as well.

everyone seems to rave up and down about ME2 and it's got me thinking about playing it when I'm done with DA2... my problem, though, is that I hate shooters. even Fallout 3 was too shooter-y for me (I felt like I kept finding myself in situations when I was getting shot at from god knows where and I couldn't do a thing about it but run away and go work on a different quest). I really dug what I played of Mass Effect 1, but it fell apart for me when I got control of the ship, didn't know where the hell to go/what to do, flew to a planet at random, and then died like 30 seconds later.

how does the console gameplay of ME2 compare to ME1?

Unfortunately, ME2 places a much heavier emphasis on the shooter elements of the game than ME1, so it sounds like it might not be the game for you. You can always use the power selection wheel to effectively pause combat, though (and it sounds like you should have been using more VATS to scout out enemies in Fallout 3), so it's not a strict shooter like your Halo, CoD, etc.

If you're on XBox 360, it's probably cheap enough by now that it's worth trying out just to see whether it's too mad for your skillz. The difficulty level is adjustable, and hey, practice makes perfect.

Then probably no. Fantastic story, scripting and characters. But the gameplay is entirely shooter. Even moreso versus ME1, due to the (thankful, imo) reduction of gear management and generally faster paced action.

This part is weird though. Primary and side quests/objectives all still exist. If you follow story/dialog and read your mission objectives, you should know what options you have regarding where to go and what to do. This applies for any RPG.

All that said, I still think it's worth a shot, especially with cheap used copies.

I just picked it up for the PS3 yesterday. Usually am a traditional JRPG player as well (replaying Xenogears and Persona 3 Portable as well right now..) and I'm enjoying ME2 quite a bit. It is a lot more shooter than RPG though, but its a pretty nice change of pace.

you can play on the easy setting to ease teh combat. Just let your allies do most of the fighting but then why bother with the game? Probably a pass for your tastes. I'm playing through it now after getting it during the Steam winter sale and having a blast, I like the pace of this much better than ME1.
