The expiration date is not the date that they cease to be fresh.
You can keep them in their handy eggshell cases in the fridge.

I did. They're about to expire and I have yet to get through half of them.

So what, you bought the little 6 packs and you've only used 3?

I used eggs months past the 'expiratory' date.
Milks 'expiratory' date is only the sell by date. Its almost always good for a week after that.
I bought like 3 dozen eggs once, used em for months.

Correct. That date is a "sell by" date, not an expiration date. They will keep in the fridge about 30 days past the "Sell by" date.

Uh you never know what that date is. Sometimes it says BEST BY. Sometimes it says SELL BY. You have to look at the brand to determine which date it is.

With that said the proper way to determine if eggs are good is to put them in warm water. If they float, they're bad. Sink = good. You can usually go past the date a week or so.

And no, milk is not good a week after the sell by date. I drank milk by the gallons each week and I would know. The taste changes after the sell by date, and yes I've gone through dozens of brands of milk.

i drink milk two weeks past at the most.. but my fridge is also set to maximum cold, so my milk gets ice chunks in it sometimes.. and with eggs i try not to go a week over, but again my fridge is so cold that ive used eggs two weeks past expiration and had no problems... i wouldnt use expired eggs for cookies or anything raw but if you cook them i doubt theres a high risk...

man, eggs are so cheap, if you are buying small 6 egg cartons, I think you will be able to get by.

Actually as far as I know with eggs this isn't true ... once cooked they are only good for about 4-5 days but uncooked they can last quite a while & the time can be extended slightly by storing at the coldest tempeture possible without freezing them.

Having said that, the longer they go past the sell-by date on the package the more important it becomes to make sure you cook them thoroughly & I wouldn't eat them at all more then a week or at most two beyond that date.

With anything you eat, when in doubt throw it out !
food poisoning is one of THE worst things you will ever experience.

I would agree about eggs (when in doubt) they're super cheap. If it's a nice Rib Eye Steak I paid 22 bucks for I might have a bit of a hard time throwing it out :)

good poisoning S U C K S. If you haven't had it thank the lord, last time I had it it was for 2 days and I thought I was going to die, even worse then the worst Flu I've ever had.

Boil them.

Older eggs make better hardboiled eggs because the membrane between the egg and the shell is weaker, making the eggs easier to peel.

If it isnt past the "best by" date, just eat them. Cook them now and have them for breakfast tomorrow.

Also, for milk, I have found it develops a severe change in taste by 4 days after opening. One week rolls, and its bad/sour. Two weeks, and its got chunks.

Boiling eggs actually hurts their longevity a good bit. Something about removing the eggs' natural protection or barriers or some such thing.

From what I understand, simply washing the eggs decreases their longevity. I have no reason to doubt it. I don't even bother refrigerating eggs most of the time; we just leave them on the counter in a basket (unwashed).

yeap i am the same. i can't keep milk around for more then a few days. though it does depend on where i get hte milk. IF i get it from a store its 5 days tops. then it starts to stink and has a sour taste. IF its home delivery it last a good 5-10 days.

Eggs seep to keep for quite a long time if you leave them in the fridge uncooked. Ive had eggs that were atleast 2 weeks past the date marked and they tasted fine and i was fine. If you cook them they actually go south much quicker

Just hang a chicken in your kitchen? Or maybe you have something like one of those vacuum tube delivery systems from the henhouse? :)
