I play at 1280x1024 with everything always on high with AA and I was just wondering would crossfire do me any good at that res? If so, what kind of FPS boost would I see?

Depends on the game, but two 4850s in crossfire do seem to net a larger performance increase than other multi-gpu setups, plus it also one of the few situations where it financially makes sense. Check the articles over at HardOCP (the ones from this past summer especially) to see some crossfire specific benchmarks.

You will see some gains, but at 1280x1024 - 4850 crossfire will have diminishing returns and may not be worth it.

well I can play at 1600x1200 but i see no point since there is not much better quality

Must be a CRT then. I would have to second the idea that xfire will be overkill for that resolution. I run my 4850 @2xAA with edge detect settings (so it's closer to 12xAA from what I've read) at 1680x1050 and have rarely a hiccup in any games (aside from Crysis). I also max out pretty much every slider in every game (again save for Crysis) and have great FPS. So long-ish story short, you need to weigh whether or not the extra $150 could go into a fund towards a better single GPU solution when one comes out that you need. I'm guessing that at this point, you have no real need for the extra horsepower.

So would I be betterb of buying a 4870 1GB?
 
No, because that means you have to sell your HD4850, which should still be fast enough for your resolution. A HD4870 is equal overkill as two HD4850's. What you could do though, is trying to get a used HD4850 in the $75-100 range.

But, unless you are really experiencing bad FPS in games, you shouldn't bother upgrading, yet.

Im not getting bad FPS but just want to know what would be good for the future
