Al Qaeda is just the tip of the spear. The spear itself is a thousand plus year tradition by the name of "political Islam" or Islamism. Al Qaeda is just one of several cells engaged in the following of this ideology i.e the continuation of Jihad. Terrorism, as a form of warfare is just a refinement of this doctrine. This happened because organized warfare against western technological might is very difficult (Not impossible though)

Al Qaeda itself is prominent only because of 9/11. Now while this conclusion may beef up our contempt towards Bin Laden & Co, remember it is just the short end of the rope we are going to hang our selves with. Jihad networks have managed to proliferate throughout the world right under our noses, sleepers cells appearing out of nowhere. Where do these people come from? How is it possible that a mere ideology can connect distant people, events and resources together to challenge a superpower? In a way, the jihad network has already triumphed against the world, merely another in an almost unbroken series of victories in that region.

What does this mean ultimately?

Consider, if Al Qaeda is just another organization, then will killing Bin Laden be of any use than making him a martyr for his kind? Then what would stop 10, 100 or a thousand Al Qaedas rising in every part of the world when the time is opportunate?
