At the moment, i get all of my music (mainly trance) off the net. But i recently purchased a nice sound system, and if anyone can help me hear the difference between 192kbit mp3 and cd quality, i'll be more than happy to start paying for music. So here is what i need you to do. If you own a CD with a pure digital trance track on it, please make two MP3s from it and send them to me. The first should be a 192kbit encoded with a popular encoder, one that would likely be used for most of the mp3s out there. And the other, a 320kbit encoded with LAME (best settings too, etc). The latter should be indistinguishable from CD quality. Well, then i'll obviously give them a listen and see if i can hear the difference. Any takers?
 
I don't know about that, but I have bought about 10 CDs in the last six months because I downloaded tracks off of Morpheus/Kazaa out of recommendations here. Liked what I heard, so I ordered the albums from Amazon. I live out in the sticks, and there isn't much other than country and old-timer hellfire radio, so MP3 format was the first time I had ever heard bands like Disturbed, Staind, Union Underground, Saliva, and Linkin Park.

If I download music I don't like, I'm probably not going to buy the CD . . . and I wouldn't have in the first place, so I really don't understand how the music companies can say file sharing is hurting their bottom line. The music industry's revenues have been going up consistently, not going down.

O...M...G! I can back that up. When I was there I thought he was joking that there wasn't more than a few stations. He was at work one day and I had to take his car to the store. I'm flipping through the channels and I'm like.....WTF? LOL There's like nothing there! :Q

Actually sales in 2001 were alot less than the previous three years or so.

The RIAA claims it was because of online piracy, however I think it was for the following 3 reasons.

1. The pop bubble of the late '90s and 2000, burst. As evident by Britney, Nsync and Back Street Boys all released albums in 2001, that well sold less than Linkin Park which sold around 4.6million copies. Compared to their previous albums selling 8-15million albums, the pop bubble burst.

2. Most albums released in 2001, well sucked.

3. Everyone tried to ride the coat tails of others, and it failed.

Okay, okay, on topic for a second. I've not been a big CD buyer in the past mainly because I've only somewhat recently "come of age". Now I'm thinking that if DVD Audio is truly worth it, I'll start a little collection of those when they start to come. The difference in fidelity should be worth it, right?

With Grokster you can also find 320kbit mp3s. I only buy CDs I like, and only if it's not just a compilation album with 1 new song (hate those, good way to screw loyal fans (it's the music company doing it, not the band usually)).

I could care less.

I download tunes to check out new music. If I want an album by an artist I like it's definately not worth my time to download the whole thing and convert it to wav and then burn it....screw that. I'd rather spend the $14 and get the case, art, and best quality.
