Would a Ultra X-Connect 500W be a upgrade from a Enermax Liberty 400W

No.

The Liberty 400W would be a better choice between the two.

It has two 12V rails vs. one.

The X-Connect, unlike other Ultra PSU's, is made by Youngyear, not Wintech, which is not as good as build quality as Enermax. Youngyear also builds Aspire to give you an idea.

The Liberty has a 120MM fan instead of a pair of 80's so it's quieter.

The X-Connect is 70 to 75% efficient where the Liberty is 75 to 80% efficient.

The Liberty has APFC. The X-Connect has no PFC.

So.... Is it that you already have the Liberty or are you just shopping for a PSU and it's a toss up between the two?

It's ignorance that keeps me from these forums. Thanks for giving me a reason to walk away from the computer tonight.

Ultra power supplies do meet FCC electrical requirements and are even UL. But I gave LEGITIMATE REASONS for choosing one over the other. What EDUCATED INSIGHT do you have to offer?

A Liberty 400W is going to be fine if you just have the one video card. Upgrade when you go Crossfire. ;)

Sorry about that, probally should have looked into that more.

Anyways, which generation of X-Connect are you looking to buy, beacuse I used to have a first generation X-Connect and I would not recommend it to anyone; two reasons.

1. The cables are impossible to route, especially the massive ATX connector.
2. The PSU died randomly around June, dont know why, dont really care, i just moved on.

I have heard is second hand information with no basis for fact!!
You posting that you have heard makes your post 3rd hand information with still no basis for fact....

I just did a google search with not one hit on Ultra not meeting FCC electrical requirements....

No problem, It was a stupid comment based on third hand information ;)

And I do admit I know nothing about FCC regulations (I wish I did; I could get a job).

I still wouldn't recommend an Ultra PSU based on the many reasons above.

Edit: And I'm glad to know that Ultra PSUs meet the accepted standards, it mmakes me feel a little better about wasting $80 on an X-Connect.

Totally different animal. Different OEM. Puts out what it's supposed to put out. Just has a problem with crossloads. Doesn't like having the 12V rail loaded up with little on the 3.3V or 5V, but still holds up better than a Topower built PSU when this happens.

Isn't wintech the same OEM for some pcp&c psus? That would make some ultra products pretty good. Do they build the turbocool series? I would agree that the xfinities are ultra's best offering, but unless you like the bling factor of the shiny coat, you'd be better off spending your $70 on an enhance 5150gh or something of the like. The xfinity has 35amps on both 12v rails? and the new rev 3 of the 5150gh has 36 peak. I think it will handle most mid range sli/xfire rigs.

No. You're thinking of Win-Tact. Not Wintech.

I agree. If you don't care about appearance, the Enhance/Silverstone 80 Plus units are an excellent value. Efficient, quiet and powerful.

It comes down to preference and emphasis on aesthetics. I personally like the FlexForce cables and have gotten pretty good at routing with them so you can't see any cables. :D

Oops, big difference, wintact to wintech...
I think if you buy an ultra aluminus with an X2 connect, they hide the main power cable for you.

Nope. That's just a "bundle." The PSU doesn't even come installed in the case.
