Would a small file/ftp server benefit much from RAID 0?

I am setting up a file/ftp server for my house... the FTP will be used primarily by friends, family, and myself. The file server will be for mp3s and for a common network share. I doing this for a learning experience so I am going to play with Linux or BSD. I have a P200 with a mobo that has its IDE ports gone. I have a Promise ATA 66 card, but I have always been curious about the Fastrack hack... I can't seem to find the resistor anywhere (RS doesn't sell that stuff here anymore).

i have a amd k6 linux router/web/ftp server. - runs fine with ata /33.. also if you need any help setting up ip masquerading please feel free to ask me for help (Ip masquerading = NAT for linux)

Are you accessing this from your local network as well? If the needed bandwidth of your local network doesn't exceed 100 mbit, then any 5400 rpm HD should suffice to pump out data. I'd be more concerned about the network card you are using and the switch/hub (switch is much much much better) to manage the network more than the HD speed.

cool... I am already running Freesco as a router... This computer will be nat'ed and I will use port forwarding for FTP traffic. I am running an FTP server on my win2k box using IIS, but I would like to get it off my main machine so that I can tinker more often without breaking the FTP and shares.

Freesco router/NAT box
8 port DLink 10/100 switch
loads of structured cabling.
4 nodes currently setup...
next will be my file/ftp
another will be a DNS server

yay! your server should be fine - just make to leave x-windows off for a lil better ping

I will be connecting via SSH to administer it so now X windows will be installed . I don't think I will bother with the RAID then. I think I will pick up a high capacity Maxtor drive then (I was planning on buying two to utilize RAID).

you don't really need that either. - redhat linux (what i use) has a full install of 2.5 gb. debian has a typical install of 200 mb. i'd get the cheapest namebrand you could find.

I know *nix is very minimal... We got OpenBSD on our nameserver at work on a 140MB HD. It's just that I need to store my 35G mp3 collection and I still have 500cd's that I still need to rip
