Would a PC133 SODIMM work in a PC100 slot?

Sorry for asking such a basic question: I need to upgrade a Portable. The PC has currently a PC100 SODIMM 144 pin memory. Will a PC133 SODIMM 144 pin memory work for this upgrade or do I have absolutely to take a PC100.
Thanks in advance for your response. Laurent

if you really wanted it i'm sure you can find some on pricewatch but honestly there isn't going to be any price difference

Some computer makers purposely left pc133 support out of their bios's. So very occasionally you'll run into a problem. HP and Dell did this for a short time to save money on bios programming. I'd check crucial out. They have a very nice memory chooser, and if they have your model listed, it's guaranteed to work.

Most times it will, but it's not guaranteed. As redbeard1 said, check out Crucial. If they list a PC133 as a possible upgrade for your machine, then it will work. If not, then it most likely won't. My mate had a laptop that didn't take PC133 SODIMMs, only PC100.

When i first read the thread title, i thought you wanted to put a PC133 SODIMM into a standard SDRAM slot in your desktop. That would definitely not work!

I think it had more to do with that some PC133 used higher density chips than PC100 or PC66. I know some old BX boards would use PC133 low density chips but not the higher density ones. We had a few Dells at work that would not take the high density PC133 but the low density ones would work fine.

mikecel79 is right. The answer is yes and no.

With some older chipsets, only certain types of PC133 will work. ie. You're more likely to get a compatible DIMM if you buy (the more expensive) PC100 memory, but some PC133 memory will work.

Agreed - we see plenty of Sony (old ones) and other laptops at work that either refuse to POST with PC133, or report that there's a 64Mb stick in there when you've inserted a 128Mb.

What make & model of laptop is it? I might be able to give you some clues as to whether or not it will work, but I'd recommend PC100 if that's what it wants.

I got PC133 and it does not work (at least on an Compaq Armada M300 I have). I had two types of memory, both did not work. Beware. Compatibility is a real issue.

Even PC100 is not guaranteed to work. See if your motherboard supports high density ram. If it doesn't, make sure the ram SAYS it's low density. There actually is high density PC100... I didn't know this and had to make a return.
