Would a current install of XP satisfy the upgrade requirement?

I worked for a couple of years programming for a company that had a group license for XP Pro (they have a big fat set of discs for all kinds of MS developer software). I came to work with Windows 2000 Pro on my home desktop and my laptop. Since I brought lots of my work home, they allowed me to use 2 seats on the XP license, rather than buy me 2 new copies. Well, that was nice, saved some bucks, but I now find that I want to do fresh installs of XP and ... I dont work there any more.

So I wanted to get 2 copies of XP Pro upgrade, but I got out my old W2K disc and find that it too was an upgrade from when I had 98. I would really rather not install 98, then upgrade to W2K, then upgrade to XP.

If I put in a new XP disc, would it look and see that I have a valid Windows install and go ahead?

You can do a fresh install from an XP upgrade disc. It will just ask you to put in your Windows 2000 disc during the install and it checks the disc to verify it is a legit disc. I think a Win 2K Upgrade disc would work fine. If not, you may just have to also pop in the Win98 disc, but it wouldn't install anything, just check to verify it is a legit disc.

Yes, thanks. I finally decided to look at MS myself and found that exact answer at the FAQ

Nope, can't upgrade off an upgrade AFAIK the license doesn't allow it.
