amd x2 3800 socket939
2gb ocz platinum ram
asus a8n-e
7900 gto
Antec Neo HE 430 power supply
vista business 32bit
20'' monitor so I run games at 1680x1050

Thinking about gettinga a 8800gts for mainly for starcraft2 when it comes out and company of heroes but I also play quake wars, team fortress 2. Waiting for another deal to get it for $250, but I'm not sure if it would improve much over what i have?

You'd have a definite improvement but that X2 3800+ would give you a bottleneck in performance, meaning you wouldn't be able to extract full performance from the card unless you overclocked it.

Absolutely not. You may wish to overclock your cpu, but otherwise it would be a good match IMO. Most games still demand video card performance, and its not like a dual core x2 is a million year old rig by any stretch.

With games still being video card limited, particularly at higher resolutions and higher detail settings, the difference between CPU speed start to converge.

Also given that GPU is generally the gaming limitation (or should be if the game is well programmed, unlike some apps like Commanche or MS Flight Sim), getting a better video card as an interim upgrade is a great idea because that increases your minimum fps to similar to that of a much more expensive system, because your best part is the bottleneck.
